Poem Artwork
Imagination Imagined
by Odin Roark

Where the sand castle spawned dreams
Dreams became the tree house
Became the apartment of independence
Became the hill top acre with tent
Then trailer
House
Compound
And all the fence-less horizons yet to come

Somewhere beneath memory’s heavy eyelids

Autumn’s leaves might begin falling unnoticed
The beauty of a roaring waterfall
Remembered only as downstream irrigation
The glistening white of winter’s cold
Becoming mere sadness without cause

Time delivers on time
Transforming figments remaining
Into man stranger
Woman stranger
Bench buddies in the park
Breadcrumbs and handouts
Cherished finger-foods and main course

With guests always welcome
Pigeons
Squirrels
A stray dog or two
All yesterday’s shadows
Complete today’s absence
Where anticipation
Begins envisioning itself

Such becomes the waning years
Retreating flesh and bone
Heart and mind
Past and present
Taking the time necessary
To complete future’s future

The fortunate few know
Imagination wills to be imagined again
Just as reverie holds sand castles are forever

"The tree house", "the apartment of independence"... are both places and symbols, gained and lost in a lifetime. Your poem makes me think of all the dreams and hopes I had, of my own interpretation of this universal theme. But I am not overcome by sadness or nostalgia; the last stanza is reminding me of the present and of something that I can do today.

Although it is difficult not to "think old" as years tic up the odometer, my imagination often finds itself lost in the imaginative world of Walt Disney's Disneyland; Cinderella castles, Never-Neverland, with its pirates and Indians, jungle tree houses, etc. The point being, it gets harder each year to image the unimaginable future. However, as you note, it will forever play on our memories, embellishments, like buttons on vests. M.True

And I just wrote that one should not build one's life on sand castles!

I stand corrected…
