Frayed Baggage

Life’s success for many of us is more than acquiring stuff one is terrified of losing.

Poem Artwork
Frayed Baggage
by Odin Roark

Dreamt fields
Where wall-less interiors boast stunning views
Personal vistas of imagination
Requiring only attachments be left behind
The resentful
The angry
The baggage labeled heavy

For just as everyone can’t be
Who or what they think they are
Revelation often becomes frayed baggage of the mind
Clutched with guilty claws
Self-loathing that refuses to heal

Narcissistic defenses
Deliver delusions of grandeur
Driving the moral compass further downward
Where an icy kingdom of vicarious reality
Becomes one’s personal abyss

Such is the plight of a luggage-laden life
One’s weighty attempt to always be part of something
Rejecting being one with the singular self as success

The fortunate abandon that which can’t be changed
Unshackling the drag-behind regrets and disappointments
And breathing in the oxygen of continuance

Discovering closure reveals the eternal opening
The paradoxical passage into meeting
One’s innate traveling companion of wager
The one who travels with toothbrush only
Sharing weightless wins in life
We know not of…

My thoughts: There will always be a lesser and a greater. Illusions of grandeur come from comparing oneself, because one wants to be the greater. stop comparing yourself, your free. Detach yourself from material things, no room for disappointments, expect nothing from others, no disappointment there either. Already you've lightened your load.

......of anything I would definitely keep the toothbrush!

So true, too much weight most of the time to be bothered with.

From some of the poetry I read, I sense that some poets are carrying around a great deal of baggage (regret) that they can't seem to shed.

I, for one look at all that baggage as the blacksmith that forged my life, freeing me to fly with the eagles and no regrets.

Beautifully expressed as always.

Narcissism, delusion of grandeur, the downward moral compass, icy kingdom vicarious reality and personal abyss - so much in five short lines! So dismal. And yet you suggest for us a heaven with a weightless toothbrush ... thanks.

Such is the plight of a luggage-laden life

How so sadly true, for most of us.

The thoughts/reactions that your words have invoked are as interesting as the words themselves. This, for me, is the key to art of expression.
You have an interesting mind, Odin Roark. It's always a pleasure to peer in from time to time.

At some point we get too old, weary, or weak to drag much of anything around. After that the bags are left in their closet mausoleums along with the skeletons that rarely get out. Eventually, opening the closet door becomes the scary part. M.True

the material is immaterial to many, but the immaterial is material to many more... what does it matter whether matter matters more than anti-matter? If life is not a chore, then it's just a bore or a snore, and oh the difference! The difference is something I adore! If by difference you mean more than just a jnd, of course... the difference is a weighty matter, too few know of it, but it is well worth the wait (in gold!)... wade into that one, and then you'll soon be defying gravity.

Intriguing thoughts as always, Odin... love to read more of your work, if I only had the time... ah well, it's immaterial, isn't it?

I live in a Hovel and I exist on social security and not very much of that. I have nothing to speak of except my children who found their father after many years. I am happy. So saying that, I have everything.
