Everything's Perfect

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Accepting survival as intrinsically perfect can be difficult. Trying to imagine another’s “perfect,” daunting. So goes Rio’s poor, year after year and into the treasure fused Olympics.

Poem Artwork
Everything’s Perfect
by Odin Roark

Rio’s open market day
Bag fillin’
Day old mango and limes
Under tarpaulins-sweating

Tank topped ladies
“Baratas Baratas”
The call for cheap cheap
Bananas on barbed iron
Catching high noon light
Pleading to be eaten
But browning at mach speed

Two teenage girls
Gathered food in bags
Off to sell their own produce
Flesh made servile for men

Men’s every day refusal to pay for love
Lessons learned painfully early
Little goes as they’d like
Unless of course
They aspire to nothing

Back in cardboard city
The mangos prove over ripe
But the limes squirt their juices
Splattering beautiful eyes
Making thankful tears of joy
Another day’s survival

Many believe
Everything’s perfect
Whatever that be

Michael is right. The slums of Rio are the reality of this world, not the Shangri-La we call the United States. It is not only those crowded together in places like Indonesia who no longer can sail to freedom in Australia, but almost all of the species of the planet that are stressed by overcrowding human existence.

But as you have said before, survival is perfect, and the strongest will survive almost anything, and, much stronger for it.

A subtle vision. WE think we know what normal is. WE think we have the right to judge others by our standards. WE are vain and ignorant when it comes to what WE choose to call 3rd world. In reality, this is the 1st world, that place where the vast majority of people struggle for survival every day of their lives. Your penned visit a poignant reminder.

Perfect slums are as perfect slums thrive . . .

A very fine way to say that people need to be more aware of the realities around them. So many blinkers.
