That Other Life

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It’s so easy to forget how safe and comfortable we live, unlike innocent Afghan children walking home from school on treacherous roads.

Poem Artwork
That Other Life
by Odin Roark

Click

Even with flip-flops
The ground’s touch
Goes unmistaken

You’re only a child
But you have traveled this road often
You’ve picked flowering weeds
For your mother
Watched them whither
In waterless bottles

Beneath your mud roof
You’ve held closed your eyes
Wishing for better times
Like now

You’ve squatted your body
Ever so gently
To sleep
Like now
Awaiting the morning

You’ve stared all night
At a starless sky
And another life
Like now

You’ve not wanted to uncurl
The comfort of remaining tight together
Just you
And your dreams
Seems so…

But this is different
You open your eyes

There’s no need to wait
The sun has risen
The wind is drifting sand
Atop your flip-flopped foot
That never moved
Remaining still
So very still
While you wondered what
The second click never heard
Sounds like

But now

You try to smile
You know it must be safer over there
That other life
Away from roadside clicks
Improvised hatred
You don’t yet understand

Your eyes rise from your foot
Last thoughts are of your brother always grinning
Just before he moves his crudely carved queen
His checkmate grin

You close your eyes
You wish you could
Take back your last move

After reading this. In retrospect even though every loss is a tragedy, I actually feel selfish and ashamed to say that my loss was more tragic in my writing "suicide survivor", guess it's how i felt at the time. I can't imagine what the mothers go through. Each day worrying about your child. Every second, every moment. That has to be torment of the heart. The children losing their parents. So much loss, so much death, unbearable heartache.

The ricocheted bullet, bombed out school, collateral damage, all part of the international war games going on around the globe. It is never good for children to be living in a war zone. An important message Odin.

For some in this world, mere walking is hazardous. Beyond the IUDs in Afghanistan, the world's military has seen fit to place land mines in strategic locations to protect military installations that no longer exist. These mines, in the millions, dot our planet, lying in wait to take a limb or life many years after the supposed conflict, is long gone. Cambodia's the worst, but other places are equally as dangerous.

A high school classmate of mine was on a military trip to South Korea and found a beautiful spot on a hilltop to observe the stars as a potential site for observing objects in flight and in space for the military. A couple of months later, someone visiting the same spot, stepped on a mine and was killed.

Every word reflects the terror and sadness of their miserable lives. What has our world become?
How could we let it go this way?
Are the majority of us now too selfish to put it right?
A sterling write, Odin.

This is done well. To the point.
I just read a book about a boy in Sierra Leone in the 90's . It's impossible to believe their on the same planet.survival minute to minute . Terrifying existence . It's heartbreaking .

Great post.

This is done so very well. Brilliant even. The comfort we in this country and many other countries gives us a sense of superiority, and not just we Americans have that superiority. To have to live in the war-ravaged countries of the Middle East and Africa would be holy hell. We can fight all the wars we want to fight in those places and nothing will ever change until something happens to change their mindset, and that would include quit worshiping who they do, and allowing women to exist as human beings, not cattle, and so many other things. I rest my case. You fired me up, Odin.
