Painting Voices

Sound and its many voices can adopt colors, blending them with the auditory noise we have to filter through every day. Somewhere in the mix is sensorial harmony. (Image by Laserstars)

Poem Artwork
Painting Voices
by Odin Roark

How indelible
These frequencies abounding
Filling our senses with color
Defending our spirit with aura

Voices speak
Sing
Chirp
Bellow
Crosshatching endless layers

How personal their colors
Sounds of red
Yellow
Green
And blue

Diminuendos to crescendos
Weaving and blending
Curling and attaching
Mixing hues of sonance
Into the kaleidoscopic surrounding we absorb
To make into our own palettes

How lightning gray
The subway shriek
The yellow/blue
Of a lone sparrow
The crimson red
Of a Pavarotti high C

Would that the world might create
A global canvas harmonized
By colors of passion
Love
And peace
Even as they sort out
The dissonant vibrations
Of a Pollock guise

To allow our blue/gray tempest rage beneath
To surface and become one
With the purity of white
To know that the reflection of all color
Cannot be known
Without the awareness of black

Painting voices
Pulsation needing only whisper’s hue
To truly hear and see

For me, this went all over the place in splendor. Not only is it a remarkable subject choice: 'sound,' but your treatment of it is a unique mixture of sight and sound and especially 'feel,' in that I actually got the sensation of 'vibration' from this poem. How astonishingly magic is that? I like that you used the word 'aura' in here, and that 'absorbing the kaleidoscope' is our privilege in the blessing of hearing sound. Assigning a color to a sound....how exquisite. Even the mention of white needs black to be....implies your illustration of sound needs silence to hear; ergo 'whisper's hue.' Exciting poem, Odin. ~~ Diana

Some of us always see the world and everything being colorful; but to some others it is always gray or black. I think this has to do within the people themselves in how they would accept the world they see. Interesting poem Odin!!

Strangely, while sounds of all kinds and music has often filled my mind with emotion, I don't recall ever seeing colors. Perhaps it requires LSD, something I never tried, for one to equate sound with color. As for the science, I know that color comes from frequencies just like sound. But I do not perceive it that way because of the way my brain has evolved into using these frequencies… Primarily for hunting and procreating.

Love this - Such a vibrant canvas of reverberation, with which any artist would be pretty chuffed.

Yes, I like very much the ending of the poem, because, quite frankly with all the colors you gave us to contemplate I kept looking for the color black, but you had saved it for your finale. Good thinking. I absolutely loved these two lines, Odin . . . "How lightning gray
The subway shriek."
