At times, urban suffocation forces us to retreat. Escape’s paradoxical nature often delivers unexpected solutions. (Image by Mihoko Ogaki)

Bliss Within
by Odin Roark
The woods
Your cabin
Your dog
Your significant other
All else in momentary exile
Back there
Where roads go nowhere
Save the insatiable feeding trough
Where gluttonous appetites of fear
Unknowingly eat upon themselves
Where traveling Monday through Friday
Preparing the day’s ever-raging strategy
Anxiously psyching up the all consuming habit
To vent upon
The system
Your mortgage
Your pet
Your domestic confinement
Is but a consuming habit
But now you luxuriate
Your Fido at your feet
Your partner at your side
Both of placid expression
Without animation
Without fear
Without…
Suddenly
Subtle sounds of a
Bucolic woodland paradise
Bristle with their own voracious needs
Nature’s balancing feat
Catching the seasonal winds of contrast
Preparing the now
For what is coming
Creation’s epiphany
Mind‘s chaos is awakened
That back there
Anticipation
Anxiety
Change
Remind you
Beneath the protection
Of woodland cover
Your flickering lit lamp
Isn’t bright enough
To keep reality’s ever changing shadows
At bay
That anywhere is everywhere
Fortunately
Those centered
Discover
An inner light
Void of shadowy distractions
Immune to attachments
The bliss within
My cabin
My dogs
My significant other
When I have all of these, I truly have Bliss Within.

Anyway, he ended up in a Northern California retreat in a cabin with his dog that has suited him just fine as he was writing his book on what was wrong with America. Without his knowledge, somebody took the outtakes and put them on the Internet, quickly becoming viral. In the documentary, the filmmaker finds Ed and eventually, gets him to come to San Francisco to the Found Film Festival where he becomes a big star among friends.
Sometimes we can come back to the rat race through no account of our own.
