Puppet Lifers

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

At times, the struggle to evolve as an independent being seems futile while dancing among the many. Still, some of us say “never.” (Image by oregonlive.com)

Poem Artwork
Puppet Lifers
by Odin Roark

We slump lifeless by birth
Urged animate by protectors

Soon our energy is gently bound
Transported to a regal dwelling
Where guardians initiate
Learning’s willing servitude

The beginning is joyous
To see our steward’s happy face
Unaware anticipation evaporates
Urging imagination’s mutation
Into power and dominance

With our strings pulled left and right
Evolving from innocence
Into that other existence
We become the dance
Punctuated limbs
Bringing body and spirit
To its knees

Our being falls prey
As social ills snuff out yesterday’s potential
Furthering us as willing servants
Our once real life dreams
Now but disillusions

Alone among many
We lament our ill-conceived birth
Knowing refusal to dance the dance is…

The End?

Four mountainous lines in here: "Urging imagination's miutation/Into power and dominance," and "Evolving from innocence/Into that other existence." How perfect to punctuate that last word with a ? This poem resonates with me personally, and is the glass holding my own philiosophy. Feels good to identify with the contents of this poem. ~~ Diana

Saying Never, and cutting those strings, can truly be life affirming.

You've got them dancing, Odin, you've got them dancing.
But not me. I'm outta here!

In life there are strings everywhere tied to us. Our work, our responsibilities, our families, and just the thought of how we are going to present ourselves to the public as they use an imaginary string upon us - ALL this make us who we are.

The world is full of puppets!! We all entered this stage called "Life" as puppets the minute we are born. All strings are attached....until the day we die!

All we have to do is cut the strings. I know, it hurts. But the rewards are far greater than being strung along for the rest of your life.
