To be or not to be. There’s always choice, but forever tempered by experience, not vicarious daydreaming. (Image by Arasacer)

Poem Artwork
Risk
by Odin Roark

To embrace the next gamble
Is to enlist one’s invisible stopwatch
That measurement of time
Spent doing
Rather than watching

To see a mountain peak’s invitation
Is to venture discovery far more revealing
Than merely raising a flag at the summit

To allow a child its first solo
That 2-wheel ride without parental help
Is to taste the challenge of judgment
To chalk up priceless experience
Over success or failure

To ask for a raise
Is to hazard one’s timing
To realize a yes or no
Knowing it will be predicated
On the boss’s mood
As much as a deserved promotion

To exercise independence
Is to dare a blind bargain
To escape from group-think
To be at oneness with who you are
Not what others try to make you

To indulge in the landscape
Of pride and hubris
Is to wager a sneak preview
Of existential terrain
Where attentive instinct will
Reveal one’s plot and headstone waiting

Of course…

To not engage
In the many chances
For self-realization
Is to but breathe
Without living

Good reader comments to this. The second stanza illustrates so precisely and specifically this idea of the 'seeing' of the beauty or wonder being of more substance than 'going' without seeing.' Just the two words put together: "attentive instinct" create a disposition of vastness in human nature potential. And "...breathe/Without living" rings long in the ears after this poem is over. ~~ Diana

Your last stanza sums it all, and I'm totally in agreement.

I think taking a risk and engaging is far more fulfilling than just trying to get along. That's why I strike out with these odd responses to poets' most treasured labors.

You have that right, Odin. To be as one with the sheeple is to lose your sacred identity. We all cannot rise to the top of the mountain, but those who cannot can still believe in themselves and try. It is the measure of walking down your own path that sets you apart from the mob.
