Sanity Ponders
by Odin Roark
Sanity ponders
A naked ceiling
As moths cluster about hanging 40 watt
Resident spider shows off trapeze artistry
All gazing at something
Gazing back at them
Cocooned in a matchbox city existence
Friendships often imagined
Find safety’s sublime darkness
Defends well insomniac fantasy
Such is the comfort of insectal connection
Knowing outside these apartment walls
The praying mantis of patience
Awaits dawn’s other kind of reasoning
Still…
Anticipating tomorrow’s sunrise
Sanity brushes its teeth
Dresses its nakedness
And prepares to merge
With have and have not survival
Illuminating humanity’s chaos
Sunlight follows sidewalk-pretense
Through high-rise lobbies
Onto skyline office floors
Where ambition’s petri dish
Continues to mutate
Sanity ponders
Living in the country is a much richer experience, although those doomed to the cubicles of the city sometimes seem to lead richer lives (culturally) and even live longer in spite of the confinement.
I really love that line… "The praying mantis of patience," among several other great ones in this poem.
