Ionesco Is Grinning

The once theatre of the absurd has become for many the reality of the absurd: aging. (Image by George Christakis)

Poem Artwork
Ionesco Is Grinning
by Odin Roark

Old and worn,
But never falling.
Like a stack of history’s lounge chairs
Piled tenuously skyward,
Aging waits formally attired
In regulation-issued pajama bottoms and umbrella.

What must the ghosts think,
Those shadows peering from the ethereal curtains of rest
Joining roguish drafts spiraling about in unison,
Playing along with cosmic-light’s hide-and-seek
While waiting the bells of darkness to toll
The ushering in of another momentary reprise?

Hour upon hour
The balance is held beneath flirtatious heavens,
Even while audacity teeters atop its rickety,
Yet daring asymmetry,
Knowing well the timeless odds.

How persistent the threat,
Like multiple windowpanes of yesterday,
Mirroring a setting sun’s repose into blinding fear,
Threatening this may be the last reflection.

Some might think ill of this absurdity,
Yet, how folly to distance illusions,
The insistent partner to perpetuity’s pastime,
That game never called on account of darkness.

Many will judge to be part of this silly tower of make-believe
Is to but await the thawing of frozen memories,
Evaporation, and the enjoining of ghosts
Now snickering at the absurdity of fineto.

Ionesco is grinning.

I guess you had to know the man and his works. Life can be deceiving sometimes, living in countdown phase, death close behind you, only to turn around and hear, "you're all better now, we'll play out this scene again, somewhere later down the line. M.True

Once again I have difficulty fully understanding but I will give it a try. It appears that aging has become a science and we are guinea pigs as we overcome every illness except the inevitable. Left teetering on the edge with a rickety existence not really worth living, but certainly paying the bills for those that take care of us.

Ghostly bad memory aren't meant to be kept, just toss them out for good.

I'd like not to think about regulation anything at any stage of life. I suppose you are issued something at each point. And those frozen memories, some so random and with out significance, makes you think what is it all for. The absurdity of it. Very interesting write. Like your abstract thinking..
