Perpetual War

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Pick your war zone. Syria, Ukraine, Uganda, Israel/West Bank, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, et al. Sadness is their common thread, and joy is their vacuous hope. Hate continues to be the ace of spades, and that is hard to trump. (Image by Cristian Townsend)

Poem Artwork
Perpetual War
by Odin Roark

What is this silence of eruption?
This stifled resonance of tremors below?
Why are the glistening ducts emitting but mutant cries down the face of truth?
When will the quiet pain find the freedom to just be that which it longs to be—peace?

Last night

Many wished tomorrow morning would vanish,
As once there were sunrises waiting to be seen.
Even as clouds seemed heavy,
Hope was there.

But now…

Somewhere in all the last nights,
And the time in between,
Emptiness fills the moonlit sky where once bright reminders
Pointed to memories yet to come,
Road signs not yet discovered.

As given,

Every morning explodes again,
And last night becomes today,
Making all that seemed possible
Evaporate with the mist of drifting fog.

Saturated with bodily smoke,
The shorelines of lost souls continue to decay,
Making friendly trade winds steer afar,
Where once their warmth cradled innocent solitude.

Hopefully the tonights of future tomorrows will bring new beginnings,
For time cannot repeat itself.
It can only continue forward as the next interval,
Leaving in its path the residue once thought…
Once even called…
What was it called back then,
When there was never a possible “last” night?

Love?

Of love and war I'm not sure how we got from there to here. Sometimes your words pose more mysteries than can be fathomed... M.True

We do seem to be in a spiral towards ultimate destruction. But I am encouraged because many violent encounters, including our Revolutionary and Civil wars brought about profound changes in our society that we honor in spite of the loss.

I'm content with larger parameters that say this phase of conflict will bring a better world like it always has and the wounds you promptly so that a generation later the destruction is almost invisible to history.

Yikes! That image, Odinsan, reminded me a bit of 'Pinhead' in that horrid Clive Barker movie 'Hellraiser'. Seems there are forces now summoning the destroyer 'Abaddon' in the Middle East. The momentum is escalating really fast. Its as if they're all caught in the swirling edges of a maelstrom. To tell you the truth, if it isn't checked, I can easily see the conflict between Israel and Hamas developing into a fulfillment of the Psalm 83 prophecy. And now Putin wanting to mediate between Israel and Hamas is absolutely provocative to me. I strongly relate to the spirit of this write, and ask every day a similar question: 'Where has love and wisdom gone?' Well done. rlc

thought provoking read, well said

Any news you glimpse or hear in passing these days is just enough to bring you down. Compassion, respect for humanity seem like a long lost rhetoric in some college class of yesteryear .
