Wordsmithing Life's Trail

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Might there be some kind of quiet reward for writers who choose to just seek impossible heights? Probably not in the real world, but in the enigmatic space of existence, there are other guerdons, yes? (Image by Colin Haley)

Poem Artwork
Wordsmithing Life’s Trail
by Odin Roark

How expansive mind’s wilderness,
This valley of thought’s choices,
Where sentences meander like streams,
Paragraphs build on river’s banks,
And history’s stories hold as peaks,
Anticipating the resultant valleys for delivery.

Daunting it becomes,
Question marks stubborn as roots,
A darkness beneath the commas’ pauses’
Those cautionary Cairns along the path,
Alerting the followers,
There’s more ahead.

Along the way,
An occasional exclamation point
Ripples its accent,
Drawing attention to
That which might otherwise go unnoticed,
Save memory’s indomitable canyon echoes.

Plotting the lexiconic crest,
Where the divide may thrust disruptive winds,
Planning and preparation prove handy tools,
As the pre-mapping of shelter
Allows contemplation and decision
Often impossible along the often unpredictable trail.

In the end…

Like life’s perpetual journey
There’s never a story’s end
Only the resolve reached today…
Knowing tomorrow will provide
An alternative route to reach
That often-illusive true end,
The consummation of thought,
That place so often just beyond the summit.

Yet…

How rewarding our expeditions,
Traversing inclines of meaning
So often avoided by the less daring.

word play for some, a serious challenge for others... M.True

You certainly have a with words and mountainous ways of expression. Perhaps the success of reaching your own expectations is enough. It is for me. Some of my best poem like, Poignant, are nearly ignored, some of my more pedestrian, like Relaxing and Roaring 20s, are sought out repeatedly by a growing fan base.

A philosophically refreshing analogy, Kent. Some beautiful imagery in this as well. Attempting what some see as the impossible is the benchmark of an indomitable spirit. Imagination or otherwise. Sadly the moxie to attempt the impossible changes as we age. I must attest to that now. The verve lessens, the fires burn down, desires change, age becomes a weight, cell-death changes the way we appear, and then, what was once 'possible' (for many) becomes only a memory they frame and hang on a wall.

Speaking for myself... considering ones-self a poet could be construed as being a very difficult, or almost impossible, height to attain. It's why I consider myself a 'creative writer.' Period! Being a poet is sort of like dropping a rose petal down the Grand Canyon and waiting for the echo. Thank God we still try though. Sometimes gems appear unexpectedly. And sometimes, if it's quiet enough, we may even hear a little fluff of an echo. Enjoyed this. You're on top of your gift here. Peace...

Especially fine, this one. The echoes 'push on, press on' are unavoidable. What meaning from such success ... that, like the journey itself, seems to be for the pilgrim to decide.

Third stanza - exquisite! The whole work a well-crafted homage to imagination many have but are unable to express; in your voice the words sail forth. Fine indeed, Odin.
