A recent 60 Minutes segment chronicled the refugee plight of the Syrian civilians, often walking the deserts to Jordan, Lebanon and Turkish borders, where they add to the more than 3 million taken in. The problem is that most Western countries seem to be apathetic, not offering to take in any of these desperate people There’s something more than wrong with this picture.

Surviving the Candle
by Odin Roark
Shrapnel or gas,
Blistered skin or severed limbs,
Choice not an option.
Families fear never reaching
Bird songs of spring,
When green leaves announce of new
A season of flowers by chance,
A garden of faith,
A newborn’s wail by arrival.
For many…
A bleak winter,
Short days,
Long nights,
Cloistering the dreaded tomorrows.
For others…
Shouldering few possessions,
The homeless children
And childless parents,
Finding a shelter remains
Their only respite along the way
To refugee camps at Jordanian borders,
Seeming so far in the distance.
Amidst such courage…
Exhaustion hovers ever so near,
A darkness sneaking up on the weakened,
Ready to extinguish the candle of hope
Burned beyond the mind’s tenacious flame,
Now fluttering before eternity’s embrace.
