Listening For the Light

We often take our senses too literally. They are, after all, there for creation. (Image by panduri)

Listening For the Light
by Odin Roark

Once I saw a melody that tried so hard to only be seen.
When I asked to listen,
the sound could only blind me in white.

Tomorrow…

I may try to go beyond the pure color of white,
back to that dark to listen once more,
to perhaps grasp again,
where seeing’s reward is all but impossible.

Did I tell you…

Once I saw a lustrous melody
whose crescendo could be heard coming from the distance,
whose diminuendo cried to not be lost,
to always be available to any who dare
celebrate the quiet,
who see the often silent melody of the past,
know the harmony of the present,
accept the dissonance of the future.

Listening for the light…
that special convergence of another dimension,
how alluring it remains.

Oh my.
Oh my.

While I found the juxtaposition between two senses, vision and hearing to be superbly analyzed and exposed, I was surprised not to find any of the others, especially smell, one of my favorites, or feeling, either from the touch or the brush of sound waves across a soft cheek thrilling the heartbeat pounding in the air like a drum. And then the sense of premonition before the sun's light peeks over the ridge and burns the retina of the eyeball that unknowingly stares at its blaring cymbal of radiance. Tasting the upside down tang of heavy metal bass guitar string vibrations.

Forgive me… You got me waxing poetic.

The pendulum swings wide here. A melody/aria ascending and descending. White (the absence of color) and black (a confluence of all color) and somewhere flailing in-between humanity roils and churns always seeking to find the very thing that's always all around them. Since I was very young I have always found quietude (like the silence in the forest) the requisite pursuit for mental and spiritual health. It's one of the few things I've gotten right. "that special convergence of another dimension," This touched me. You know... I wrote a piece - 'Vision beyond cornfields' - a couple years ago that I never was led to share. I've always been that way though; only share about one in ten. Your summation in this piece, Odin-friend, I think, has tinctured the moxie in me necessary to consider sharing it. Good insight. Enjoyed. r

As fine a description of synesthesia as I've seen in a long time. May we all celebrate that quiet ... too few have the ability to travel between those dimensions with the word skills to help us understand.
