Everywhere's Nowhere

Although this poem may appear as an oblique reference, today’s media prattle mirrored on Huff Post: “Fox News Twists Itself In Knots To Find An Explanation Other Than Racism For Charleston Shooting” brings acute focus to the irresponsibility of certain journalistic ratings whores when they charge “Christian hate” as the motive for the S. Carolina massacre instead of the obvious “hate crime” that it was. Thus, just more evidentiary discovery of how screwed up our political persuasion is, whether from the quasi-pulpits of FoxNews or from the Right Wing extremists in Washington…it’s all the same: the inability for a vast populous to BE beyond the “follow me” syndrome and just, plain, grow the fuck up. (Yes, F*** now holds a proud descriptive place in the Oxford Dictionary) As the subtext of Obama’s comments on the mass murder attests: Sad. Very sad. So…lest we get caught up in headlines, better we not lose track of ourselves, who we are, and we might become without some conscious pause.

Everywhere’s Nowhere
by Odin Roark
Have you ever
held on the sound of crickets
lamenting the loss of quiet darkness?
Those who have
know that the men
who came with their CABLES OF LIGHT
destroyed the diverse songs that once filled both desert and inner-city air
especially the lonely symphonies once of moonlight share.
Have you ever
touched the flame of fireflies
as they huddle in the shadows of scorching NEONS,
the endless pulsation of man's remembrance of innocence lost?
Those who have
know the sparks of nature's night watchmen
might never be seen again
in this maze of attention-obsessed-indulgence.
Have you ever
listened to the silent vibration of human essence?
Those who have know the crickets and the firefly
survive in accepted existence
knowing what and who they are.
As you walk the avenues of life's shock and awe,
its bombastic light and sound show
begging to be embraced,
remember everyone has a chance to win,
or BE.
Some have listened and know.
Some have not.
Have you ever been to Vegas,
or a Brooklyn “get it on,”
maybe even a simple drug induced delusion
in the confines of your own floor show?
Certain escapes are sadly
but a vortex of everywhere’s nowhere.
I'm with Obama on this one. I look at it this way. The United States can absorb, and I use the word absorb the way that Obama did when he said that the United States was big enough to absorb another 9/11 without going to war. Tragedies happen all the time. They always have. Atrocities like the one that happened in South Carolina have happened many, many times in the history of the United States. Many of these were never reported and may or may not have markers recording them. History absorbs them and they are forgotten unless brought back in ridiculous melodramas like Texas Rising.
It is really unfortunate that the media have to glorify, exaggerate, and twist every incident. But then, if ever you are in a library and have access to newspapers from the 1800s, or even newspapers from the Hearst empire of the early 20th century, you will certainly see a lot of yellow journalism twisting stories and making things up.
Nothing is really new under the sun.
As usual, a keen eye and superb prose poetry at the cutting-edge.
