Air asks so little,
This unseeable life-form
wanting only to enjoy a bit of adventure,
perhaps an unexpected storm,
followed by the sweet companionship
of cicadas or crickets
as nighttime brings temporary solace.
Yet, we habitually…
Bombard its altruistic nature
with hateful words,
destroy its peace with
explosions of industry and war,
suffocate its very essence
with a twisted guise of progression,
our ego-maniacal destruction by fumes and smoke.
How easy to ignore…
Wounded air deserves time to heal,
lest we forget Man’s air-borne denial of self-destruction
portends life’s dependency on breath,
may be running out of time,
for wounded air needs time to heal,
availing consciousness a last chance.
Ironic how subtly these invisible qualities of life constitute
the only divergence to humanity’s flat line demise,
the only free global insurance around.

The solution back there was a higher smokestack. Send the offending smoke up into the jet stream where, as a frequent flyer back in those days, I could often see a dirty ring between the layers of the atmosphere at over 20,000 feet.
We have solved that problem in the last 50 years except in the burgeoning growth of Third World countries and China where it is still allowed as the price of progress and development. Much more insidious is the increase methane and CO2 in the atmosphere, mostly still unchecked and invisible. Hence the problem. Most humans seem to have to be able to see a problem before they believe a scientific explanation.
We are doomed to breathe the hot breath of our ignorance if we don't act quickly.
