infantilizing Adults

Maturity is under siege as if a fable-come-alive has cast an evil spell over the behavior of ostensible grownups. (Image by Pinit)

Poem Artwork
Infantilizing Adults
by Odin Roark

Like some will-less following
of twisted Pied Piper followers,
a masquerade of fear and anger
a mesmerized populace of bottom feeders
gazing in wonder,
their blinking eyelids in sync with
a frightening number of like mind,
like purpose,
like ignorant,
marching in lock step to the abyss,
inhaling its acrid fog of self-loathing
evil portending more of its infinite reach.

Crestfallen…

The non-critical thinking mind,
with its accompanying lack of focus,
blindness to real freedom
and disregard for social responsibility,
succumbs to delusions of success as an entitlement.

Sadly…

Obvious to any rational being
this weak-willed body of followers,
these walking open wounds of dejection and want,
breathing in duplicitous messages of promise
for their inciteful anger and resentment
may indeed enjoin celebration for the moment,
but remain unconscious to the demagoguery of such tantalization,
succumbing to the harmony they want to hear
even as it crescendos into echoes of chaotic dissonance.

Mercifully…

Not all of humanity is of like mind or like purpose,
as many insist remaining of cogent reasoning.

And still…

The indecisive among us
sit back and wonder
of their own silence of choice,
their continued stifling of tremors obvious,
quashing the urge to object,
addicted to more out-of-tune noise
passing for melodic accompaniment,
even as they smilingly skip down
illusion’s yellow brick road.

The informed…

See an observing world’s glistening ducts
forming tears of quiet pain portending
more pity for trickery masking the face of honesty,
opting instead to follow the fraudulent suit,
tie, and manufactured skin color.

To do-the-right-thing…

Survivalists must hold firm
to sentient rationale and common sense,
believe that tin-soldier-power has always self-destructed,
allowing tenacity of goodness to rebuild life imbued with love,
of lessor repression and exploitation,
if only for confirmation of hope,
brief as it may be.

For the cycle is merciless…

Hiding the price of despotic glad handing,
the playing-of-the-public like a flutist of infinite breath,
the bloviating narrative of unlearned lessons.

Likely…

Gazing in from the curtained wings of the past,
stands Caesar,
Napoleon,
Stalin,
Hitler,
and Mussolini,
drop-jawed at the latest staging,
the latest Pied-Piper-attempt
at infantilizing adults.

Even they must shake their heads in fear.

Robert Browning's 'blackmailing' is a very much relevant method nowadays ;)) but today it is briefly termed 'media.' After reading these lines, I find myself watching a collage, a modern ballet's performance to understand which I first need to grasp the code in order to read it properly. Yes, I can feel and perceive what's going on, but to learn something more -- the code is mandatory; and this something is a knowledge. The knowledge leads to power while the power runs media, this or that way, as it sees fit. The famously known piper, therefore, used his pipe from both ends. . . This is one of your hotshots, Odin-san. Cheers, alex

While you have described them so very well and others have called them "sheeple", "the meek" (the Bible), "silent majority" or whatever the word of the day is, they are mostly just stupid--ignorant of their own deception. Like John, I have taught many supposedly in "higher" education who are really not wanting to be educated but to gather the "skills" to suck on the tits of promise that the Pied Pipers of wealth use to deceive and enslave.

Well cogitated. Incisive. Somewhat disturbing too because it's unfolding right before our eyes and there's not a doggone thing we can do about it. The 'Pied Piper' illusion is perfect. I'm somewhat certain (but not positive) that you are particularly rankled by these types coming from the world you were once shackled in. Your list of dictators and autocrats was well placed and drive home the fact that there is 'nothing new under the sun'. What's coming has already happened before. Your creative stream is in 'full-flow' of late, Odinsan. Congrats. Excellent work well received. r

Regretably there are far too many such people in the world today "smiling down illusion's yellow brick road", no doubt one of the reasons why you have described their nature so wonderfully. As a teacher, I sometimes feel dismayed by the cohorts of students who simply don't have a thought in their head. Needless to say, this is a problem since I spend a lot of time in my writing classes explaining to students the importance of ideas. I had a student the other day say proudly that she didn't have any ideas. I suggested she take another course (where you don't need ideas!). As always, well done Odin. Your theme selection is most appropriate to exemplify the "sign of the times". John

Yes, a very large number of any population are vulnerable to the deceitful tunes played by the pied pipers of deception. Watching in silence while it happens clearly is not an option for you, nor for me.
That may be the single entry in the Book of Gold beside my name. But that is enough.
