Starbucks Alone

With so many peopled environments fostering isolation, is it any wonder popular gatherings for coffee remain communities of loneliness? (Image by Sethgodin)

Poem Artwork
Starbucks Alone
by Odin Roark

Rooms of tabled people.

Immobilized installations.

Who
will dare my eyes to appreciate
their abandoned yesterday,
their fearful today,
their unknown tomorrow?

Who
will dare let beat their heart
without fear,
without prejudice?

Who
from behind another detached table
will raise their face to mine,
relinquish their disguise,
and assuage another’s loneliness
with… “hello”?

In the age of mistrust and isolationism where there is no effective way to distinguish between someone who is just weird and another who is a cold-blooded murderer packing heat, loneliness can be a comforting buffer zone. I widen my buffer zone and stay away from coffee houses. But I'm just weird.

Answer: no one. At least not in the Western world. I will say for the Arabic world, it is much easier to strike up a conversation, where someone "will raise their face to mine". Yes, Arabs are much warmer, social and friendlier than they are given credit for. That said, this poem really hits the mark, brilliant in mood and tone. Perhaps because what is written is so true. that's what economic development does with people and society as a whole in the developed countries. . . Still, since I'm here and at the very bottom of the forum ;)) it means that communication between the people of common interests is alive. thanks for bringing up this briefly but sharp. Cheers, alex
