Tether Free

Some find freedom in their youth, others in experience. Still others in that trustful companion that empowers imagination. (Image by Alastair Magnaldo)

Poem Artwork
Tether Free
By Odin Roark

Beyond this moment,
so flows the present
against life's shoreline.

Sweltering in the sun,
crouched on calloused travel,
words hover over paper's anxious direction,
pen needles the worn language
seen through cataract's opacity.

Linguistic currents,
like layered tongues
savoring word upon word,
suddenly lurch across the page,
thirsting for shade,
even as a belligerent sun
tenders blistered lips
burning one's last utterance.

This hesitant pause stretches,
allowing sweat's cooling release
as final decay takes remedy
upon yesterday's blood and heroes.

Here,
where ancestral sand and salt
soothes wounds,
embraces quest's end,
circuitous relay takes final rest
awaits time's natural carrion.

Soon,
sent aloft,
creation’s flaming arrow
arcs its tribute,
inviting pen and paper,
heart and mind,
yesterday’s today
to burn as one
into the next journey…

tether free.

freedom for sure

A poem that portends to an afterlife, or merely starting over, once all the ducks are in order. I'm not sure which. Regardless, the wordsmithing is flawless.

Sometimes with your poems, I like to point out images and expressions of particular interest, but in the case of this poem, I would just about have to repeat the entire poem here in the comments sections if I want to highlight critical images and jargon of note. This is an incredible romp through a linguistic fantasy. Ok, let me mention at least one in a crowded field: "creation's flaming arrow arcs its tribute." My God, where do you get these images from? From an admirer. . .

Your creative juices are gushing without giving up even a hint of their luster. I would be satisfied to have come up with the phrase "tether free." Bravo!

The possibilities of getting 'tunnel-vision', and shriveling-up, are increasingly probable for a writer. Especially in a world so glutted with drivel and hubris. Remaining original, and inspired, surely requires one to remain untethered. Here's to the 'next journey.' May it be 'one-of-a-kind'. Good thoughts. Enjoyed... r
