Survival exercised in Life’s game of choice. (Image by Pinterest)

Pawns and Queens
by Odin Roark

How unpredictable life’s battlefield.

From birth to death,
defenses circumventing sword's thrust,
taking breath's campaign,
becoming fate’s naked warrior.

Hopscotch we will for survival,
maneuvering across checkered landscapes,
peril's gravity tugging and pulling,
mind accepting surprise attacks,
hidden landmines,
predator strategies.

Sometimes we pause…

Avoid distractions.

Think ever further ahead.

Realize…

Wisdom balancing the mind’s options,
knowing the Queen’s protection of the King
needs the sometimes chaotic nature of the pawns,
tenaciously surviving storms of intelligence,
discovering endurance often foreshadows victory.

Then…

The lesson learned prepares the next challenge of time,
knowing the game is nothing but a lifelong schema of reasoning.

The fortunate…

Stumble into an epiphany of enigma’s reward,
discerning life’s most valuable crown of success
is not the Now,
but the To Be.

while the Japanese fighter's slogan is 'must to win' (by analogy with the recent 'yes, we can' ;)) ) the Chinese one is 'not to lose.' And herein is a great wisdom. That's why the crown of success is to be after the latter. And even our outgoing generation will witness it. Cheers, alex

I do not play chess and therefore do no understand the moves, nor have I had much (if any) success. I am familiar, however, with "balancing the mind's options" and know the meaning of endurance. You touch upon some important points in this poem, setting one to think. Success, yes, if not Now, then the "to be". John

You've hit a nail squarely. In everything Wisdom has a key. Sadly not enough find the harmonious (spirit), symmetrical (mind), balance. Life is like playing chess with God. Your moves are called 'choice' and His moves are called 'challenges'. Good thoughts. Enjoyed this. r

A wonderful summation of life and what it means to be successful. When I look back at all the ups and down of my life, I'm so glad I have reached the successful plane that I am now to carry me through the rest of the days of my life. Unless, of course, disaster strikes, like it so often does.
