A Never-Happened Night

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Many years ago in NYC, for a class assignment, we were required to pick a public location, study a behavior, and imagine where such a behavior might lead. I chose to linger late at night beside a sidewalk florist at 6th and Greenwich Ave. in the Village. There, I observed a purchase being made, paid for with a pocketful of loose change, carefully counted out. Later, the experience became the basis for the character Theo in Echosis.

A Never-Happened Night
by Odin Roark

Flowers bathed in sadness
are flowers that remain without light,
that smother within an airless wait,
as if suffocation were its destiny.

Having once begged to be caressed,
to be touched for remembrance.
slowly passed into petals laying languid and solitary.

To become a deep breath that once knew of fragrance,
a bouquet of joy once given,
but never received,
a snap-shot in waiting,
but never taken,
becomes a never-happened night,
a melancholy whisper from the past.

Just to think of all the flowers bought that somehow were never received or were rejected like the love that was expected but never came. So many, those nights… Those never happened nights.

It's amazing to me how, over a life-time, we tuck away input and imagery (willfully or not) which mysteriously is put to use at a later time. If we slice up the essence of who we've become over the decades, like a pie, we can create many disparate characters in a story who all have their beginnings in the experiences of one individual. It's what I did in the Monumental Journey Series. A tender insight here, Odin, that sighs and tugs at the heart. Well done. r

to improve your lungs' function, exercising held breath helps much better than enriching your lungs intensively with oxygen. The same is about our social life. Enjoyed this piece greatly. Cheers, alex

A moody poem, full of melancholy but enriched with symbols of longing, of the flower, the fragrance, the breath. Excellent write.
