Lasting Bubbles

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Today, I’m remembering the last rest home visit to my father and imagining what images might have being dancing behind his tearful, yet sparkling, eyes. I guess we all tend to imagine what a parent’s last thoughts are like. I believed there was a bit of me in each tear.

Poem Artwork
Lasting Bubbles
by Odin Roark

How small the funnel then,
my breath sending circles
left,
right,
high.

Blow, mother said.

The colors, like rainbows,
floated tiny dreams skyward,
popping ever so gently.

Time passed.

With a big boy's hollowed out ping pong paddle,
I ran in circles,
holding firm the maker,
trailing fantasies aglow,
a bigger ring of joy,
a magical super wand
making daydreams float even higher and greater.

Time made me older.

My own son's first exposure
as he lay atop the grass,
beaming,
giggling,
staring,
as I too passed on lineage of joy,
blowing all things pretended skyward.

Thoughts embraced my adulthood,
hovering reveries forever seductive,
launching even bigger bubbles destined to pop,
becoming but yesterday's perceptions.

Today…

My pillow drenched with fatigue,
my temperature rising,
my breathing unsure.

I watched a fevered ending ever present
A father still bringing smiles to my sorrow
as memory set afloat glittering images for me,
for my dreams not yet burst,
for my childhood memories.

For that time when
bubbles were like magic,
as they floated away into…

So long ago.

When the quality of life is irreversibly on the wane, there are no winners. There are only memories of better times, when love was evident, and dreams sustained us. Still, it is good to remember, especially when someone can capture the magic in bubbles that float on. Another superb poem.

this is what your middle position between your old man and your kid displays in a true way: each and every step and breath of your own is simply a sort of bubbles bunched together to be ready for bursting at any awake moment. . . that's the reason why some prefer to live drunk all the way and pass away in their sleep ;)) a great job. Cheers, alex

You seem to write these poems of passage so well and quite often. It is certainly one way to look back at the perspective of a life.

Tenderly and forthrightly expressed. I was with my Mother on her deathbed; she was one of the few women I've revered in my life. The helplessness was whelming. Peace to you...

Brave and fragile and hollow, Odin, our memories. This one makes me appreciate some of my own again, before they flit afar.

A poignant image presented and explored with subtlety and depth. An amazing poem. John
