Three Ring Madness Retired

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Today, I was roaming around the internet and came across an article describing the May 6, 2016 convoy of trucks taking the Barnum and Bailey elephants to their 200 acre sanctuary for retirement (Image by Jasper colt)

Three Ring Madness Retired
by Odin Roark

Many said we shouldn't,
but many did.
Countless watched with glee,
some wrinkled their brow
Hordes clapped their hands,
a few covered their eyes,
ears,
and conscience.

How insufferable it must have been,
this barrenness of elephant chi,
void of compassion's generosity,
needs of their hearts imprisoned.

This was man’s cultivation
rendering soul's irrigation so natural,
at times appearing so empty of tears.

Once…

We peered down from seats on high,
cheering three rings of twisted principles,
compliant hands prodded and hooked innocence,
as languid eyes of heritage lost,
as intelligence exploited,
broke their spirits,
and left but swaying heads and trunks,
like a metronome winding down.

Finally…

Slowly reminding all,
time was running out,
life’s essence continued to pump,
only to reach sad eyes where
tears were rendered dry.

When bull hooks no longer mattered,
when creature respect was finally realized,
when trainers’ iron talons
ceased to be their only feeling,
enough of us recognized
how misunderstood and habitualized
these giants of intellect had become,
making it no longer possible for ticket holders to hail Caesar.

The new sadness?

Persistence succeeded in retiring
the elephant three ring madness,
only to find the human counterpart continuing its cruelty,
needing to control, dominate and terrorize a much larger big top...

The world.

Bring in the clowns!

For thousands of years animals have been subjected to tasks as beasts of burden. It is only in the last century or so that animals have been considered worthy of humane treatment. But old habits die slowly. Your poem shows that through concerted action, inhumane treatment of elephants in circuses is finally coming to an end. Unfortunately, in the wild, elephants are also rapidly coming to an end.

I was sickened a year or so ago when a dentist went on a $50,000 safari only to shoot and kill a prized lion. He was astonished at the outrage that was heaped upon him around the world. He supposed his fee was his entitlement to ravage as he pleased.

Good subtext in this. It leads this reader to consider the elephants being working citizens and the ringmasters being the autocratic (type) rulers that wring life from them. Ending on 'the world' leads me to believe that the writer has an inkling about what is fast approaching on a global scale. Novembers election could well be the trigger. Your internet-surfing birthed something good today. Enjoyed. Peace
