Isolation at Starbucks

There are certain jobs and environments that breed anonymity and loneliness.

Poem Artwork
Isolation at Starbucks
by Odin Roark

A room of tables.

An installation of “Don’t Touch” people.

Who will dare my eyes peer into
their emptiness of yesterday,
their frozen today of tomorrow.

Who will dare let breathe their heart
without fear,
without prejudice?

Who will lift up their eyes and see mine
sitting at an isolated table,
guessing I’m just another face they’ll likely ignore?

Seems to be an either/or world. The talkative ones (that i attract) are such colossal jerks that I prefer the silence. Maybe its my after shave...

Years ago, while taking the New York subway, my brother told me to do the same. A whole lot of lonely people riding daily afraid to make eye contact or converse. I found that true also of airline flights. Sitting next to people concerned with their laptop or their reading and not willing to just have enjoyable conversation. So, Starbucks is just the latest version of this preoccupation in public that makes us lonely strangers.

Never drink the stuff. Everyone I know that does seem addicted to something other than coffee beans. Anymore, making eye-contact, or communicating in public, especially down here in SoCal, seems like an old book lost on the top shelf. I relate to this. A succinct measuring. r

Very perceptive...
And I guess it's the same the whole world over...

Oh how I know the feeling. Well observed; well stated. John
