One World of Black and White

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A prosetry exploration into the difference between the student and the teacher, the artist and audience. Finding common language for both sides of artistry, be it a painting, symphony, poem, i.e., the creator and the patron as one is never easy. Still, we owe it to ourselves and others who might respect the artist’s work, to make an effort to understand more of such oneness. (Image by Dali)

One World of Black and White
by Odin Roark

How furiously most navigate
these polarized worlds of image and sound,
of color and lack of.

For many, black never becomes white,
white never embraces black,
magic’s paradox banished
as arrested minds continue to perceive one
or the other.

Yet

For a precious few,
those who sit before
a black white world of keys,
tendons flexing,
bone and skin stretching forth
as limber fingers share a different universe.

Hands realize the musical decay’s reach,
that often unheard touch of fading timbre,
to quietly extend the reverberation
for those in need.

Such merging of color’s deep mix,
its wash of infinite searching for hue and texture,
gives birth to unique tone and vision,
enabling layers of voices to step forth,
becoming echoes to further layered reflections,
embracing sounds of the piano’s loving expression.

Behind trained fingers and hands,
there resides a restive pulse,
a place where artistry gathers legitimacy,
striving to be felt as a language familiar enough
to suffice the heart’s desire and nourishment.

Such is the flight of magic.

One world of black and white the keyboard artist knows well.

For others, a missed passion the pianist must express,
even if no one else listens.

who said that only the white is able to expand spectrum? Yes, the pianist ought to press both keys to create the music. And when the music is over, one turns off the light to yield the pause of silence to the darkness for awhile. The Oriental attitude is set here for good. Cheers, alex

Immediately, I thought of music by Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson who reached across the lines both black-and-white to the universality that music is.

But your intro struck my thinking about reaching the audience. For those who write esoteric (highfalutin) prose or poetry to reach for the ultimate in literary applause, I would caution that most viewers are readers at a third-grade level and therefore need help in understanding. It bothers me when readers tell me that they needed a dictionary to read my work. If we don't communicate, what's the use of writing?

The mystery of the imagination is a thing of wonder. How we perceive the world is a mystery of the imagination, as you have explored here in the perception of black and white. John
