The game of chance always has a high price, even as nature offers alternatives.

Poem Artwork
Vegas
by Odin Roark

But...

Have you ever…
heard the silence of crickets lamenting the loss of silent darkness,
those who have known that the men who came with their cables of light destroyed the songs that once filled the desert air and its silent darkness?

Have you ever…
touched the flame of fireflies as they huddle in the shadows of scorching neons,
the endless pulsation of man’s loss of innocence, or those who have known that the sparkling of nature’s watchmen of the night may never be seen again in this maze of indulgent corridors?

Have you ever…
listened to the silent vibration of your inner-self? It knows of the crickets and the firefly, and you, in particular, as you walk the Strip of searing light and sound. The vital spirit gives everyone a chance to win every moment of every day. Some have listened, and some keep walking to the invitation beneath the pulsation of multicolored lights that lure those of inner deafness and blindness to enter and place a bet on…

Less we forget, Slots, Black Jack, Roulette, or for the deep pockets, Baccarat, there to take your bets, even as Vegas is always a dealer’s choice for one’s loss.

I can picture a barker standing outside a Vegas casino reciting your words--splattered with discarded drinks, and food, and brochures as the gamblers scurry past and into the waiting arms of the dragnets of deceit.

Vegas is the place where each and every one has a chance to rehearse one's dying ceremony nicely; it's not so much about the catch as of the ritual. therefore, this idea and this action will never die. Cheers, alex

It is amazing how many people are drawn in even though they know the odds are for the house.

As I read I couldn't help thinking that this is what a colony on Mars would be like. A garish, strangely attractive settlement on the arid featureless surface of Mars where you bet your life when you go there and can never return circa 2039.

A change of page (and poetic rhythm) in this inquiring poetic narrative. Intriguing. As I turn to haikus and tankas, you turn to extended narrative. John

I have gone a few times in casinos it's just not my thing, but I can see how it draws many. Enjoyed your poetic story line, Odin
