Reality Becoming…
by Odin Roark

Forty floors up,
adrift in Hotel Paradise’s Monday Night Special
vacationing with cable’s newest holographic VR fantasy.
He smiles.

One encourages Cindy,
the instant designer servant of sorts,
to rub more scented oil on his chest.

He adjusts his head piece,
boosts the sun’s temperature,
as he slides the credit card for another fifteen minutes,
continuing to lounge atop the warm tropical sands,
driving his tan deeper and deeper.

While below on the streets,
real-time seems to remain the same,
like an incessant drizzle,
leaving streets puddles and darkened.

Cops in their parked cruiser nod off,
giving no mind to rain changing to snow.

Drifts emerge.

Visibility vanishes.

Shadows hold vigil across the street,
ghostly storefronts waiting,
a brick through the window,
a lock picked easily,
another homeless passing out against a door jam,
a liquor store being held up by
punks in ski caps.

All…

Identities in perpetual fear.
for this is just another day
for the privileged high above,
just another indulgent night,
or day,
or week,
or month,
ad infinitum.

While below,
everyone’s reality is becoming…

This makes me wonder what color the sky is in their world..........both sides. Having had wealth and misery lost to middle class and O.K. with it. "While below,................"! Outstanding!

Love ya!

So poignant! I actually visualized Mayan kings, slaves building pyramids, and today's Trump Tower. So few words invoking so much imagery.

The chasm between the rich and everybody else is now accelerating with the new administration lying nicely with Congress, and hopefully soon with the Supreme Court. Whereby the slogan, "better again," will certainly cause the ivory tower ridge to go even richer and further from reality at main street level. Sad.

A few snippet reactions: Seems nothing ever goes away in our lives until it has taught us what we need to know. I have not, and will never, embrace VR technology. The potential for re-writing, and corrupting, synaptic pathways is far too great. From my experiences the privileged not only dwell in towers (where they strive to be worshipped, and adored) they can dwell also in the darkness where they can manipulate and corrupt what they want to control without being seen. When does our existence become something else? When we choose it to be so. That's what I've learned. You've painted a sobering picture. You understand a certain aspect of human nature well. Peace to you... r

The juxtaposition of the rich high up above, and those of us below in ?reality becoming" is astounding. There's no accounting for it. John
