Dysfunctional Living

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Sometimes, the headlines become overwhelming and demand something more in us than a knee-jerk reaction. Making life perfect I ot possible but the striving toward a semblance of “right” should always reain the quest of proressionist-minded people. Don't’’ know why, but of late, pondering the world’s developments ( and lack of) became unavoidable, especially with nature in crisis versus man’s other complexities, especially in global politics. Poem Artwork
Dysfunctional Living
by Odin Roark

What is it to see,
but never emerge from the dark?

As children, we marveled at color,
at movement,
at perception, et al.

But, now…

There are those who would have us
obviate consciousness.

Fortunately…

There are some who know
that inflicted pain requires not a Band-Aid
to cover a wound,
but an eyelid that upon closing
guards the iris of self-destructive persuasion.

And yes…

Is it not possible
that without the innocence of risk,
the opening of the inner eye,
we might be forfeiting living,
indulging in mere existence,
becoming but colorless tears of non-beings?

My own two children were brought up hiking and fossil hunting, going to the library as I made sure my grankids did too. They have their times on their smart phones but still prefer the outdoors and adventures. So do I!!!! Our tears are colorful!!

Love ya!

I am so happy that the children of today have videos and images never seen before from all over the world about not only dinosaurs and fictional creatures like transformers, but they get an education about the natural world that our generation was mostly blind to. Thinking that football, romance, a good paying job, and kids were all that we had to look forward to while keeping the "bad world" out there at bay.

It turns out that our "Happy Days," were much more dysfunctional than we thought (and some of us still think).

I once toyed with the notion of writing about the absolute necessity of taking risks in order to find yourself in a world that only wants to heap its troubles on us. You have reawakened an old urge.
