Underpass Escape

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In my previous line of work, having witnessed many underpass tragedies in waiting, I’ve come to believe few of the deeper stories will ever be told. (Image by Wordpress)

Underpass Escape
by Odin Roark

With muggers and murderers at work,
we often felt like we were living a “Clockwork Orange” dream,
even as our hands molded predators out of mud and cardboard,
smashing them flat when playtime was over.

A cat and two mongrels kept us warm at night
as we huddled in our refrigerator box.

Then there were…

The times we would venture out and find people willing to part
with a few coins, a dollar here and there,
enough for some food. Tears became common.

We’re just lost teens in a hell never dreamed of,
yet, fortunately having never been made to watch the underpass slaughter of homeless,
drunkards, and even other teens, all in the name of pure hate and misunderstanding as the weapons.

On many an occasion, we had to watch our nighttime warmth and cooing feathered friends scatter as life beneath an underpass became such a hell’s rehearsal that...

Such a dark escape was not what we counted on.

It is the teens that are the most vulnerable. And it is an unknown, murderous place to be at the bottom of the food chain.

Just today I thought of my friend, a former prostitute and murderer (not by choice, but by circumstance), who has asked me to help her write her story. Perhaps I should before her deeper story is lost forever.

I've never really seen these homeless under the bridges but in the morning as they are coming out of their "places". My heart breaks for them. No one should have to live like that or settle for that.

Love ya!

I have seen many a homeless person in those underpasses in Central Park, everyone's nightmare that life could come to that. A sad tragedy. John

It's tough out there. I never panhandled, but I did have moments, long moments of starvation. I've worked as a washers of dishes before automation was very popular. Had another little zinger up my sleeve as well, I was a very good linotype operator. I was on the mean streets by choice, still it was a hard way to go.
