When I'm But Ashes

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Writers often belong to families who forget or avoid reading the author’s work.
I often wonder if there’s fear of discovery keeping them readerless.

Poem Artwork
When I’m But Ashes
         by Odin Roark

Will you get to know me
when I’m gone?

After endings evolve into
new beginnings
when questions cease to arise?

What is it about another’s presence
that so often dissuades inquiry?

What is it about knowing someone
up to a point that signifies,
satisfies
nullifies
and indemnifies against loss?

Is knowing someone
dependent on personal experience,
or can a well-defined shadow,
useable in the sometime harshness of light,
remain spirited beyond yesterday?

Perhaps you’ll scour the dim attic sanctum,
discover dusty boxes,
sealed up retrospect,
where passion’s shadowlight still ablaze,
has remained unread for so long

I hope you’ll get to know me
When I’m but ashes,
for absence is but a convenience
available to those seeking forgetfulness.

This is tremendously beautiful. In golden years of a spectral lifetime, this lays itself upon us like a comforter, and you have given this feeling reverence and dimension. The relevance of this act of writing is illuminated in your lines, and I especially like "for absence is but a convenience/available to those seeking forgetfulness." Your thought is an abyss of awareness, Odin. Still delving and reveling and revealing. Carry the flame. ~~ Diana

Lots of depth within the lines of this one, Odin. The wailing of sorrow over ashes, or casket, is for the most part a sham. You die. We cry. It is written in some dark and remote book. It expected, and shall prevail. Personally I would hope the sorrow, if any, when I die are experienced when I go is done with frivolity in some dark, dark din of iniquity.

Oh, do I know what you mean!! Perhaps, if these people really got to know us in real life, they would have nothing to do with us!! LOL!!

Love ya!

Jane
