Elevator Man Remembered

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

The Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles is a much used location for productions. In thinking back over some notes and photos of several days of location filming there, I was reminded of its surreal impact. Poem Artwork
Elevator Man Remembered

A wrinkled hand
rotates Time's worn handle of half circles,
giving arrest to past rides awakened.

Up and down,
listening,
hearing,
never forgetting.

Watch your step.

Ornate iron confinement,
charming for youth,
insulation for some,
sentencing for others.

Cables retch echoing secrets within,
sliding metal dregs past elevated remembrances
among whispered conspiracies,
softly spoken nothings,
muffled weeping,
all preambles shadowed
in corners of illusive passage.

Momentary respite
gradually gives way to silent whimpers of fear
as passengers await floor-stops.

Fortune.
Reward.
Love.
Penthouse dreams.

Elevator man's eyes rise.

Arcing brass arrow above
waving Wisdom's index finger
past invisible floor thirteen,
allowing today's filigree of delusions to remain patient...

For the moment.

You evoke memories of the forgotten people had lives and thoughts and much more. An interesting write. John

I expected more about the men (and women) who operated elevators in major buildings up until they became "self-service" like everything else. I particularly recall a hotel in Manila where all of the operators were little people and stood on crates to operate the controls.

But your poem appears to be about the dramas that occurred during the long life of the Bradbury and the film productions that followed that were even more dramatic, if not as realistic. Like telephone operators, elevator operators often got an ear full.

You brought back fond memories of shopping in downtown Cleveland and going to the department stores with the elevator operators announcing what was on each floor we'd pass......"women's dresses and sportswear". 'Enjoyed!!

Love ya!

Jane
