Beds
We make 'em
but habitually lie in 'em.
From "clean your room" time
to military "bounce a dime" time,
beds cling to us,
or we cling to our beds.
Some attach a bed to everything
The "reckless" Bunk.
The "get acquainted" Queen.
The "power play" King.
The "narcissist" Four-poster.
The "rulership" Canopy.
Romantic, eh?
And oh, how careful we choose our trade-ins.
Growing up.
Growing down.
Coming of age.
Gaining on age.
Running from age…
AGE.
So…
Even though beds are about
pulling the sheets taut,
fluffing those down pillows airy,
flapping and shaking that comforter protective,
truth be told,
most of us
but concede to lying in 'em.
Our bed?
Someone else's bed?
Might some of us never find out?
The insatiable habits never cease,
only move on to new iterations.
Love ya!
Jane
You made me look at my time of liking to sleep on the ground, not liking sleep in sagging old beds, especially with my twin and I falling into each other in the middle--yuck, furnished apartment beds, followed by beds acquired with houses, floors in empty houses, cars. Been sleeping for 30 years on the bottom bunk of a cheap divorce purchase--she took the wrought iron antique with her. Recently tried to replace it with a hospital bed to no avail, because that bed and mattress were dysfunctional, though expensive. So I'm back to my old bunk for the duration. Yay!
