Poem Artwork
Awareness Gasping
by Odin Roark

How gentle
the awakening to breath,
life’s connection to awareness
even as consciousness chokes for air.

How simple,
how rarified this realization
taken for granted,
mostly ignored,
often denial becomes more politicized.

To somehow escape.
To lie among the grasses.
To keep alive one's existence.
To be.
To witness.
To become singular with the dwindling clean air,
the remaining unpolluted water,
the uncontaminated food.

What might that be like?

Inevitably…

Humans joyfully existing beside the insects,
animals and fowl may be but tomorrow’s illusion,
as Earth’s space seems in self-sabotage mode,
our enduring awareness gasping for what remains.

It certainly does look inevitable given the trends everywhere leading to total ecological breakdown. The image shows it so well with us carrying the military-industrial complex on our backs as we follow all the major animals to extinction.

I'm optimistic that we will come to our senses, curtail our population and began to leave the planet to plunder the solar system, leaving the moon and earth alone to continue to evolve more wonders than already exist. But the dark side hangs over us as long as certain humans retain control with their greed and inability to comprehend what they have done.

I've often wondered how much the iron, steel, concrete, etc., affect the earth itself. (here i go! lol!)

Love ya!

The earth will survive. It's us that won't.

We seem to be in denial about how we are affecting the planet. At first, we thought the earth too big to injure. Now we know better. Thanks especially for this poem. John
