Antennae

Take your pick: North Korea, China, Russia or the US. Who is more inclined to force as the only answer to survival? (Image by Daily Mail)

Poem Artwork
Antennae

In adjusting our antennae,
what lengths will the waves of continuum require?

Will smiles ever again evade
our angered overload and distortion,
our tears slowly dissolving connections?

Can this new means,
this universal transmission
merge emotions with
intellectual spark,
avoid destruction by fire,
allow flame to light candles,
not infernal machines of hate?

Will the mountain stream
continue to carry the simplicity of
leaf-sail atop bark-boats of innocence,
floating child-like imagination
through man's unquenchable ocean of mind?

Will orbiting satellites someday conjoin
what’s left of our swirling auras of Nature?

Will questions beg "When" answers?

"When" can be a long time for Ones and Zeros
aspiring to know,
to think,
to be of life’s sustainment

Can such digits ever tell us
how near the Singularity truly is,
that point where all parallel lines meet,
the point where a measured variable
reaches unmeasurable or infinite value,
that moment beyond which technological progress
will become incomprehensibly rapid and even more complicated?

And if such movement be resolved,
might man's moral compass risk annihilation?

Life's antennae awaits adjustment,
but what direction?

Might what’s out there in the universe
have an answer?

I believe that we all hold our breath waiting for the answer to the question that John asks. Your last question may be our hope.

Love ya!

That's interesting. I'm writing a short story about the Singularity right now that I should post sometime next week. The difficulty with what's happening with North Korea, and as well, in the Middle East with Israel armed with nuclear weapons surrounded by other countries with nuclear weapons, doesn't seem to fit the premise of the poem. In these cases, it is human beings at the button of destruction. It's amazing that something far worse than 9/11 hasn't happened with us having the genie in the bottle for 70 years, waiting for someone to uncork it.

Actually, most futurists like myself see the coming of machine intelligence to be far more rational, benign and less emotional that we have been in our constant battles over territory and power since the beginning of human existence. I simply believe, and not naïvely either, that superior intelligence is also superior emotional intelligence that will use compromise and negotiation rather than cold cocking someone in a bar fight that they didn't know was coming.

Your poem explores the major issue of our time. We now have the capacity to destroy life on the planet thru nuclear weapons. Will our emotions defy our intelligence and succumb to the test? John
