Dare To Listen

Nature’s often abstract way of communicating may someday be all that’s left. (Image by M. Meir)

Dare To Listen

Time chooses to whisper,
Having endured shouting decades,
A species’ feigned listening,
Maelstrom's obsessive noise-making.

Still persistent,
Is but a parade,
A "just married" tin can raucous
Tied to mankind's bumper.

How tenuous one’s duration.

Yesterday…

Sitting inside time's treehouse,
This place of early discoveries,
Where do and don't became but chaff-covered kernels
A slow growing wisdom first heard
Through Daddy’s cheap wine curiosity
Slowly washed away innocence,
Introducing adult fantasies
Through the malaise of unknown tomorrows.

Synchronously, tiny sparrows
Nesting in branches above
Chirped their own hunger pangs,
Awaiting mother and worm.

Below, a squirrel foraging acorns paused,
Looked up and listened to the Now of Nature’s family,
Savored sounds of his own way and means.

Today…

Time awaits the next moment.

As far as the eye can see,
Old rooftops recede,
Conifers hold firm their rightful place
Hosting fowl and predator alike,
Remaining ready to engage the next of reality’s misdeeds,
Endless out-of-control concussion of erosive man,
While the planet's natural system digs in for another encounter.

In duration’s not-too-distant future,
Man’s earth-destroying roar
Will hopefully stumble and be swallowed
By the unsullied trees,
Rocks,
And life-consciousness,
Allowing the essence of identity's in-exhaustive patience
To be heard.

Dare to listen…

Some will hear desperate existence whisper
The harmonious nocturnes of everything that is,
Even as ignorance and resistance
Remains forever tone deaf.

We are not listening to the sounds of silent death that are all around us. But it we are the last ones left, we will hear the howl of the wind as it alternately brings pelting rain, fiery hot summer blast of dry air, and bitter cold shrieking through the rocky landscape barren of all life except the lonely listener, close to death, himself. Like you have written before, life will rise up after the last man is gone again, but no man will hear its charm.

A fascinating inquiry into the perceptions of the modern world and its inability to plug into the messages of the natural world and the beauties of Nature that surround us. Especially love, by the way, the closing stanza. Another excellent poem. John

At times, nature cries softly as trees fall and rivers dry up. At other times, it raises its head in protest and brings on tsunamis, tornadoes, and earthquakes. It fights back, never giving up. Neither should we.

Those last two lines are the icing on the cake! The entire write tells it like it is. I like that about your writing.

Love ya!

Gotta be careful of "Daddy’s cheap wine," don't ya know. It'll get ya in trouble. Besides, I think we are already speaking out of this world.
