Hunger Pain

Transporting oneself to an imaginary place works wonders for a rainy day. (A prosetry/flash fiction exploration)

Poem Artwork
Hunger Pain

He and his cat
Sit upon upturned suitcases
Peering vacantly out the ocean-house window.

He and the cat stare together
As the reflections press back,
Cloning the vacuum of isolation.

The bookshelves behind him,
Empty.
Kitchen cabinets,
Empty.
His stomach,
Empty.
His heart,
Empty.

Beyond the window,
High to the right,
Encroaching weather gathers.
While to the left,
Escaping sun hovers below cloud cover,
Resting a few moments longer upon the horizon.

Another guest joins him.
Perched on the window sill,
A roach.
The rather large roach
Eyes the storm,
Eyes the cat.

Soon…

Night’s cover
Will erase the perceptions,
Returning his mirrored picture,
His room’s embrace
To but a dark cell in his mind,
Where bars are ever present,
Except when reflection erases them.

Today

Weathering choruses precede the night.
Its rain quickly turning to flurries,
Quickly turning to carpeting flakes.
Reflections transpose to memories of what once was
Feeding his hunger pain.

Ice crystal flakes and laughter salad.
Alarm clock soup.
Roasted innocence under glass.
XXX soufflé of web loneliness.
Fricassee of conscience forever steaming hot.
Wine of repentance.
Patience breathing,
Readying absolution
For some worthy day.

Without warning,
A smile envelops his stare.

Waiting out the sun sinking into slumber,
The tenacious roach--,
A testimony of nature’s perseverance,
Time’s eldest statesman--
Remains stoic,
Anticipating the next century,
Cat willing.

And he?
His feline?

Because reflections know not lying
Being alive isn’t so bad.
There’s always unexpected imagination
For additional company.

That roach! We just never know who is going to drop in! Yes, there are times many of us experience those "hunger pains". I know, I do. This write definitely hits home. 'Enjoyed!

Love ya!

This poem came home to me as I sit trapped in a rather more enriched environment than in the poem but still resorting to fantasy and on-demand movies and television to relieve the boredom of not writing another novel just yet.

Stanzas like this one parade your stellar workmanship with tasty phrases one could almost eat and drink:

"Ice crystal flakes and laughter salad.
Alarm clock soup.
Roasted innocence under glass.
XXX soufflé of web loneliness.
Fricassee of conscience forever steaming hot.
Wine of repentance.
Patience breathing,
Readying absolution
For some worthy day."

I differ on only one thing. All the cats that I know would make short order of that roach. Even my little Pomeranian, probably deprived of protein by his dry dog food diet and stimulus by his waiting long hours for me to arrive from work, was often seen with roach legs or wings protruding from his still licking lips. ;-)

And imagination it is that brings this poem alive with recipient memories "Reflections transpose to memories of what once was // feeding his hunger pain." Yes. Well said.
