Vagabond Dog

Ever notice how trustful the homeless and their dogs live life? (Image by Pinterest)

Poem Artwork
Vagabond Dog

Long after panhandling hour is past,
he sits beside the worn shoes of his homeless companion.

His canine eyes blurry from boredom,
gaze at the encroaching dark.

A distant bark raises his ears.
A friend?
A pal?
Another like me?

Probably not.
Those like me pass in the day,
occasionally curling up on the opposite corner
while their transient buddy safety-loops the leash around his ankle,
holds up their tattered sign: “Anything will help,”
nods to us “over-traveled” street wonderers,
acknowledges we carry no sign, just a cup,
and smiles at us and his passersby.

Afterwards…

We vacate our corner, count the cup’s change,
rifle through a few trash cans for cans and bottles,
trod off to the abandoned building we call our place,
and bed down on our cushy rag and torn mattress bed.

Such silence now. My ears seem forever perked,
listening for peaceful sounds of night,
the tree-leaves rustling their late night wind songs,
the occasional owl’s hoot in the woods beyond,
or a wanderlust cricket letting us know the night is good.

Sadly…

The street lamp outside
is forever casting shadows
that won’t go away.

The loyalty of a dog is never seen more starkly than
when he remains steadfast at the feet of one with worn-out shoes.
A great lesson captured so eloquently.

Dogs have an innate pack mentality and quickly bond with humans, generally accepting the human as the alpha, regardless of the human's stature in life. A dog can provide a lure to get people to drop some coins in the cup, because regardless of the deplorable condition of the homeless person, a friendly dog is always adorable.

And, on those very cold nights, a dog can provide the essential warmth needed to make it sleeping outdoors until the morning. Yet, it makes me wonder how long those dogs can live with the kind of food they get from a vagrant owner. I'm sure it's not nutritious enough.

I understand that love and devotion, I have lived my whole life with dogs, even those "street" days of mine.

Perhaps their animal friends are the only thing that regularly gives them hope. Jewel, the singer and actress, was homeless in San Diego with her Mother for years; they slept in her Mothers car. "I developed a loyal following. No one knew I was homeless" Jewel said. Hers is a riveting story. My wife teaches for San Diego Trolley. She passes through downtown San Diego every morning. She reports that homelessness has quadrupled in the last few years. Perhaps we are coming dangerously close to accepting the homeless situation as a problem we cannot solve. We don't give money to the homeless. We give money to the charities that feed and shelter the homeless. A touching piece, Odin. Peace... r

Very touching. I spent about five days in New York passing thru on my way "home", such that it is. Always take note of the poor homeless that fill street corners, wishing I had more money to help than I do.

Such an unconditional love and loyalty! This brought a tear to my eye.

Love ya!

Jane
