Diseased Moral Compass

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To my muse - As we grow older, some of us are gifted with a messenger of sorts. For me, it has been from a quiet, yet powerful muse, one who showed me how any kind of dishonesty can destroy one. The daily headlines this past year, and especially the past couple of weeks, bears out her perception, which fortunately, is becoming my own. ( Image by Iniciar Sesion)

Poem Artwork
Diseased Moral Compass

How tangled and complicated our efforts to face the truth.
Like the seaweed of a lonely shore, we endure this constant return,
the rise and fall of our species’ state of mind.

Hollowed out in the once healthy marrow of Man’s integrity,
the tunnels of our synaptic ventures have forever provided
hooks and twists, bringing humanity ever closer
to the languid exhaustion of effort.

To avoid the pain of lying from loss of effort,
that ever-present awareness of deceitful consequences,
we often couch our expressions with
smiles of duplicity,
body language of control,
and eyes veiled with innocence.

Is it any wonder that our mendacious behavior,
creates internal toxic waste we often purge into a public pollution,
contaminating others with dishonesty’s insidious disease of both mind and body.

Can our deteriorating sentience ever recover
without acknowledging the desperate need for
holding together today’s precarious course toward truth,
the rescue of humankind’s diseased moral compass,
that enigmatic hard wired direction wanting desperately
to remain integrity’s true north?

"Integrity's true north?"!! That truth cannot be altered. Fantastic!

Love ya!

There has been a lot of discussion about politically correct language. But there hasn't been enough discussion about politically correct morality. My observation is that the most extreme morality people tend to have the largest moral problems swept under the rug. The hypocrisy is almost unbearable as a bitter taste reaches the mouth.

It would be better to discuss tolerance and understanding… Counseling and behavior modification where needed rather than harsh judgments and punishment. Maybe that is why religions have stayed around so long. Forgiveness of sins is a powerful motive for loving your religion.

"The arc of history bends toward justice" is as well-crafted a phrase about hope and the power of our collective moral compasses as this observer has ever heard. Sometimes it takes one helluva jolt to get us back on course. Brace for impact! can be a welcoming reminder.

Can't say it better than John. In this age of Trumpisim, I hope we are beginning to wake up, and reset our moral compass. What I find troubling is the case of Roy Moore. People have said that even if the allegations are true, they would still vote for him. Not only is that troubling, it's puzzling as well.

A stark epitaph of our age, and the question at the end, dare we answer it, can we?
