Peripatetics roamed ancient Greece seeking understanding of life and wisdom. As the new year comes closer, perhaps it’s time to remind ourselves what’s at stake as many continue ignoring a quest for truth. (Image by Frederic Ardley)

2018’s Avarice
Another year of hither and thither,
candy-dreamers continuing their walk,
meeting along the way truth-seekers,
a mere bump at times,
a collision more often.
How frail the peripatetic Aristotelian,
those whose footsteps may go unheard,
but whose presence is forever a challenge
to the less inclined.
How few are left,
those of us who find falsity intolerable,
who can truly find certitude
in traveling the unbeaten path.
How fortunate to retain trust in tenuous realities,
where regardless of time and space restrictions,
the aged,
the immobile,
the psychosocial disabled,
are still able to secure the path for themselves
as well as those us whose way may be lost.
How celebratory the wayfarer
whose journey remains never ending.
forever ignoring distractions that cloud
and dissuade the less determined.
Can we not repeat some positive history,
follow the ethereal nature of Aristotle,
venturing into unexplored analytics
releasing bondage of the heart,
suffocation of the mind,
imprisonment of the vital spirit?
Is not liberation to allow truth’s essence
to become your own,
allowing the quietness within to become one’s shield
against outside clamor and craze?
Is there not logic and reasoning
in a never ending journey
seeking but to know oneself,
to be oneself,
and to expel avarice
as but an abyss left behind?
