Sanity's Disturbances Waiting...Again

Today’s Florida carnage brought to mind this quote: I define poetry as celebration and confrontation. When we witness something, are we responsible for what we witness? That's an on-going existential question. Perhaps we are and perhaps there's a kind of daring, a kind of necessary energetic questioning. Because often I say it's not what we know, it's what we can risk discovering. Yusef Komunyakaa

Sanity’s Disturbances Waiting… Again
YESTERDAY
Disturbance awaited…
Just as Nature reinvents itself continually,
so too the human mind
often searches for its sanity.
Patterns connect,
dismantle,
find new tributaries,
all for the quest to accept,
understand,
or for some,
to remain anesthetized.
Oh, to sleep,
to escape incessant profundity of reason
while crickets voice
their lull for the void.
Struggle we must
to vanquish this nightmarish noise,
allow angelic melody its rightful time,
stifle echoes unbridled,
breathe deep the purified air of repose.
Still…
Sleep is often deprived
wakefulness-racket abounds,
one’s solipsistic quicksand
forever remaining the challenge,
the brain’s perpetual struggle for survival.
A morning’s sunlight
breaks curtained exile.
Crickets sleep.
Alarm bells beckon.
Our program responds.
TODAY
Disturbance awaits…
Awakened,
actions once more warrant thought.
This voice,
now raised at the dog,
next yelling at traffic
followed by outbursts on fellow workers.
We speak loud,
sometimes nonsense,
sometimes warnings,
other times acquiescence,
anything to escape the sense
of being out of control.
Just as some would believe
Freud’s id cares not of
ego’s comfort,
while ego patronizes or accepts
super ego’s moral compass,
so too will others see their consciousness in freefall.
Yes Freud thought he had the answer,
but alas,
in such a world,
das es
thinks little of
das ich,
and das über-ich
seldom is awakened.
TOMORROW
Disturbance will prepare to recycle…
To either conquer,
or surrender,
all for a contemporary time,
where absent morals,
ethics and simple decency,
might hang tenuously,
but with principled threads of right and wrong.
Fail, it cannot.
For while id forever massages
our mulish ego,
super ego continues weaving the
safety-net of reason and conscience.
Might survival be mostly about
trusting sanity’s disturbances
will one day succumb to the quiet?
So, our disturbance-awaiting-Congress:
Is it still "too early" to do something?
Love ya!

Preventive measures like extreme gun purchasing requirements seem to work based on the results of Japan, Germany, England, and recently, Australia. The intent may be there, but the tools of mass destruction are not, saving the horrendous news we keep hearing of so many killed for no reason whatsoever except that they can be by weapons meant for war.
As writers, we are partly responsible for writing stories that involve using these kinds of weapons in heroic fashion, when there's nothing heroic about killing multiple people and considering it good because they are "bad." We have courts and laws to judge that, not judgment by the one with the most powerful gun or best shot.
