Whittlin'

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As everyday modern life gets more and more complicated, a pause to reflect might render some great childhood memories of a time when there was a simpler grownup world.

Poem Artwork
Whittlin’

A stick is a stick,
Unit it isn’t.

Granddad knew.
People still whittled then.
Clasp knives had a purpose.

On porches and tree stumps
Wisdom did sit,
Piling shavings on the ground.

Heads on paws,
Dogs blinked occasionally,
Keeping close watch on creation.

Sticks got shorter,
And shorter,
Then very short.

For many a granddad back when,
Whittling was intense,
Sculpturing the day’s purpose,
Rendering heavy thoughts ever light
As dogs, children, passersby,
Exchanged one’s everyday simple thoughts.

And so it was.

There was precision and reason in my grandad’s focus,
Even as he suffered through a day’s crunch,
Cram,
And grind,
Anticipating the sculptured big stick
Becoming his prideful little stick,
Later.

As late night fireflies danced,
He rocked on the porch,
Explored his mouth’s meaty stowaways of the day,
Savoring the best parts
Only he and his sculptured toothpick could appreciate.

The dog, now with raised head and tail wagging,
Fantasized something chewier and bigger for his dinner.

this is a seasonal way of life when between the sowing and mowing there is a pause but not for a farmer's hands who cannot find himself without business. the hands are the face of peasants and farmers that feel a shame once being idle. Cheers, alex

So very cool! I had a very old piano I salvaged with old ivory keys. I sold most of the ivory to a guitar builder for inlay and used my little Dremel tool to make ivory toothpicks!!! I love this poem for it brought back a very fun pastime. 'Loving the memory of the wisdom imparted and everything your imagery imparted!!

Love ya!

Jane

Awww . . . Do I ever remember the whittiners! Darn right I do, and it was the old men, like the ones you described in this cool poem. Sitting on the porch, rocking and whittling.
