Give Me Intermissions Or...

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A world without creative involvement risks succumbing to reality’s plague: a desolation of spirit. Perhaps to welcome unexpected intermissions to our routines might stimulate some much needed creative passing of time. (Image by Tommy Ingberg)

Poem Artwork
Give Me Intermissions Or...

…Give me death.

So many challenging modalities.
So many diverse types.
Horns ala Miles Davis.
Baton ala Gustavo Dudamel.
Curtain ala Eugene O'Neill.
Blackout ala Alvin Ailey.

Walk-throughs…

The Met.
MOMA.
Guggenheim.
Whitney.

For some, the aspiration ache…

Actors Studio.
Steppenwolf.
Goodman.
Oregon Shakespeare.
So many regional rewards.

And the classics of the silver screen…

Fellini.
Antonioni.
Bergman.
Kurosawa.
Kubrick.

Forget not literature…

Virginia Woolf.
George Orwell.
Henry James.
William Faulkner.
David Foster Wallace

And lest we forget Nature
The mother of subtle intervals
Ever cycling its wisdom
Seeking our personal creations.

Intermissions…

Life knows of pause,
But often squanders its use.

While…

For those choosing to drink of contaminated water,
Art remains relegated to the nectar of Gods forsaken.

Yet for those of pure thirst,
Avoiding such damaging sustenance
Rendering imagination's spirit dying,
There is a desperate call for pause.

The lesson…

Without the suspension,
We remain vulnerable,
Overwhelmed,
By diversionary smothering.

Might it be…

Without some imaginative intermissions
Reality remains forever…

Just our everyday crushing reality?

at the end of the day, the art will have to save the human world in the war vs. technologies/machines. Frankly speaking, it's difficult to figure out how, but 'without some imaginative intermissions' the real collapse is inevitable; that's for sure. Our reality is too violent but also too fragile. Cheers, alex

How apropos for me. I would often take intermissions in my past where I often broke away and spent an evening entertained from the regimental work that I always did. Now, I find it harder to leave the seven day routine. Even today, trying to plan a trip, I'm here reading and commenting on poems instead of getting to the matters of the trip.

More than likely, yes. An informative expression (IMO) that gives the reader a glimpse into some of the writers personal philosophy, and how human artistic accomplishment has shaped him. I am in accord about nature, certainly Steppenwolf (if you're referring to the Herman Hesse novel) and Orwell (Down and out in Paris and London). Enjoyed this insight, Odin. Well done. Peace... r

I like the way your pursue this idea of "imaginative intermissions." It made me realize this is precisely what I feel when I see people, all people, virtually everywhere, all of my students, in classrooms, in hallways, people on the street, people on park benches, people in elevators, they ALL have their head, their eyes (their hearts?) locked into their "oh so smart phone", while I am there, in the elevator, in the park, on the street, in the classroom enjoying my "imaginative intermissions." Thank you for reminding me that I am still doing something right in the face of all odds. PS: I don't have a smart phone, just an old Nokia given to me many years ago by the university to um, take calls. Fortunately, nobody calls me.
