Sabrett in Tow

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It takes a lot of organizing of one’s index to give due credit to living in Manhattan for any length of time. So, some prosetry credit for one hell of a growing up period.

Poem Artwork
Sabrett in Tow

Way back when…

Horns, brakes,
clickity clack of high heels,
overwrought pieces of sidewalk conversation
morphing into the history of Manhattan.

“Grab your hot dog, Mr.”
Yeah, it would get cold
if I stayed here listening
to Conscience and that drunk
still broke and inhaling the aroma of body parts unknown
ground into luscious doggy dogs by Sabrett.

Then it happens…

I ran,
jumped,
pursued some good looking legs,
parlaying my sloppy hot dog into
a bid for loneliness abatement.

Of course…

I’m no match for NY taxies,
limos, delivery trucks, honking
and the shout of profanities,
so…

I gathered my Conscience,
calmed down,
swallowed the remains of
undefined flesh tasties,
and toddled home…

That’s my bench, there.
my claim-without-cost license
only Central Park residents know about.

But…

It’s home. And what’s such a home
without the Sabrett’s corner and the
traffic of dreams parading by.

(Their dogs were not bad, BTW, even back before I became vegetarian.)

Hotdogs were the fast food of that day. Their nutrition is dubious. But I enjoy your ventures into the period of time you struggled in Manhattan and came in touch with the reality of survival and how literary greatness could be achieved.

I stayed away from the big city as a youth because I didn't want to endure that kind of borderline existence. However, I did travel one time from my hometown in Wisconsin to visit my girlfriend, a fellow instructor the college we worked in. I flew to O'Hare in Chicago and had a connecting flight out from Midway. Instead of taking the limo to Midway, I took the helicopter because I thought I would see Chicago from the air. I did see the skyline some 10 miles off to my left, but nothing but low-lying buildings below. It was noon and I hadn't eaten, so I procured a bratwurst from a vending machine. It resembled a larger hotdog with a pale gray look of dead meat, not the bratwurst that I was familiar with. And although it tasted a bit like a hot dog, it did not resemble the juicy flavor of a true bratwurst.

Once while in California in the Bay Area, I thought about renting an apartment in San Francisco. After viewing a few dingy high-priced apartments that were built shortly after the earthquake and fire, I returned to the Peninsula and my inexpensive studio apartment with free parking, redwood trees and a pool.

A nice snappy poetic shot of the NYC favorite hot dog stand.
My grandson had one last time we were there.
It did not disappoint. Sabrett makes the best dogs in town.
Some mustard and kraut, please!

A few years ago, my son was sent by his company to work in Manhattan. Everything was so expensive then so even with his rent was paid for by the company he could not save any money. Perhaps it was better at the time when you were growing up in it. Things must have been cheaper then.
