Bedtime

Some experimental prosetry Q & A for those who argue accepting accountability can’t be both simple and complex. (Image by flickr)

Poem Artwork
Bedtime

We make 'em,
but hesitate to lie in 'em.

From "clean your room" time
to military "bounce a dime" time,
beds cling to us,
or we cling to our beds.

Interesting.

Some attach a bed to everything.

The "reckless" Bunk,
the "get acquainted" Queen,
the "power play" King,
the "narcissist" Four-poster step up,
the "ruler-ship" canopy.

Romantic, eh?

And, oh how careful we choose our trade-ins.
Growing up.
Growing down.
Coming of age.
Gaining on age.
Running from age.
AGE.

So…

Even though beds are about
pulling the sheets taut,
fluffing those down pillows airy,
flapping and shaking that comforter protective,
truth be told most of us
but concede to lying in 'em.

Our bed?

Someone else's bed?

Might some of us never find out
which is the bed we’ve made,
and then never embrace the truth
to sleep in it...whichever it is?

This one is a really interesting trip;
Amusing, provocative, contemplative, but a thoroughly fun read! Thanks, I'll never think of my bed the same again.

Back in the late 60's, I had a book written by the (as I remember) Maharishi Hashish Yogi. In it, one of his sayings was, "You've buttered your bread now lie in it.". 'Don't know why your poem reminded me of it but it did. (Don't forget the mirror on the ceiling!)

Love ya!

"Running from age" has finally made its presences’ known. I have gathered knowledge over these years, but seem unable to put them to good use. My poetry? I write, hopefully to touch someone in a good way. Or even touch them in a bad way. You can learn, even from bad things and words. Nothing profound. Just Making our beds? We do that every second of every day. And we are being watched. The watcher(s) take from us, the good and the bad.

There's no escaping accountability. A nice metaphor for how we end up. The scare word for me is… Bedridden. Fortunately, although I am forced by a pressure sore to endure an hour in bed every midday now until it heals, I find lying in the bed that I've made, extremely difficult at times and just can't wait until somebody gets me out of there! Especially in the morning when ideas of what I'm going to do during the day haunt me until I can escape the torture that is truly, hell on earth, I'm lying in, and can't get up and out of. Something like the commercial, "Help, I've fallen, and I can get up!" Only much worse.

Sorry, but I read far more into this than you intended. ;-)

As Willie and Merle sang , I'm looking for clean smelling sheets, and all the soft places to fall.

Give me a quiet place and I can make my bed (and lie in it!).
