Time as Phantom

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We often think of time as our enemy. Perhaps it’s time to consider other options. (image by flickr)

Poem Artwork
Time as Phantom

It sometimes jumps ahead,
this thing we invented as time,
panicking our hearts
messing with our minds
forever the court jester.

How little we know him
his memory often hides behind harlequin colors,
a shadowed suit of one’s receding light,
a three-dimensional essence
having succumbed to wisdom’s impatience,
finally conceding to a dragging of the past as attachment.

How sad to not know…

Time’s present insistence
offers gentle ushering,
often guarding us with
options to escape the entrapment,
even as we may not be ready.

In the end,
we may have made a friend,
that part of existence
that knows no barrier,
no end game,
forever ready
to accompany us
into the next evolution,
the next arc,
fulcrum’s destiny,
pivot’s next juncture.

Time waits for no one?

Perhaps we’re wrong.

Might duration’s chronology
be numberless?

Might Time be an innocuous fear?

The need for us to have time is primordial, why early civilizations worshiped and focused so much on it, because the seasons and even the phases of the moon were so important to their very meager existence and survival.

Today we have myriad ways to slice and dice and turn seasons, even day and night into anything else we want. The city never sleeps. There is no darkness where we don't want it. Our food grows year-round. Time is still essential for face-to-face meetings. While we can GPS ourselves to meet at a location, without time, we cannot arrive at that location at about the same time.

"Let's do lunch." Never happens. Unless of course, we do it at the same time every day or we exchange time and place when we say it.
