Yesterdays Becoming...

Musing is a state of mind that finds special comfort in knowing it can’t be stolen or abused. The past knows no demise, only periodic checking. ( Painting “The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory” Salvador Dali)

Yesterdays Becoming…

To the guardian of our inner-selves.

Preserve our innocence of words

exchanged via email to email

that time when passion of intellect first took flight.

Keep safe our simple remembrances

that first breakfast meet

as our eyes asked those initial questions

while nervous hands toyed cups of coffee

growing cold beside unbuttered toast

.

Protect the memories of

those aching next morning muscles

longing to retire a blowup mattress

 for bedding of dream-like solace.

Watch over our past

when we began to be more as one,

hiking trails of fern and moss

where threatened summer rain upon our faces,

stayed undeterred as tired feet urged us further

into Nature’s special discoveries.

Forget not the beaches where sunsets astride ocean carved rocks

framed driftwood-fire embers as they

danced their restless sparks skyward to the stars

Never let us forget New York’s swaying subways,

our germophobic hands tenaciously balancing

with poles, bars and when possible,

safe holding to each other.

Make permanent our recollections of

loft home intimacies,

of one desk,

two sides,

two laptops,

two faces drawing words from each other

to be written into another day’s creation.

And forever keep secure

our ongoing sundown conversations,

when each day’s good and bad are discussed, debated,

and often become the next day’s imaginative grounding,

forming another chapter to our creative time together.

And so…

To who or whatever maintains

the archives of one’s most precious time,

please keep alive all of our past,

our present and our unknown tomorrows,

those still-in-shadow yesterdays becoming.

An interesting write. These two lines, "Keep safe our simple remembrances / from the unbuttered toast" have me confused. You are correct, rememberances are our very own kedliescopes of life lived.

It's wonderful to have a life full of memories. It's even more wonderful to write them down before they are lost, both to the author and to the author's readers. I would encourage everyone to write down their memories and place them on the Internet where they will have a rather long life until the server is shutdown. But a much longer life than an aging human's memory. Some lose it quicker than others, but we all lose those memories in the end when we are gone.

Reminds me to write down some more memories from my childhood that I didn't put in my biography.

A melancholy tribute memory. Kudos.
