Awakening Man's Chimera

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Today’s headlines provide a great reminder that mythology if frightening—and just as in Homer’s Iliad, where a Chimera is described as “a thing of immortal make, not human, lion-fronted and snake behind, a goat in the middle, and snorting out the breath of the terrible flame of bright fire,” —we too may need to recall Bellerophon and Pegasus into our thinking. (Image from the Louvre)

Awakening Man’s Chimera

From where did it first appear?

From what was it made?

Is that which we see,
true to all that we hear?

How long can mutation of heart
force subservience of mind?

And when will it end?

Today?

Tomorrow?

Or what if…

It is destined to stay,
has always been with us,
this goat head of innocence,
lion body of brazen want,
serpent tail of dread in reserve?

Some might ask…

Is mythology a mindful reset,
a begetter of symbolic answers
when honesty and principals have been consumed
by our own fiery breath of threatening fear,
claws of predatory persuasion,
and venom of slithering hubris out of control.

Still others wonder …

As minions wallow in their solipsism
and continue to cheer the demise of truth,
will they ever become aware
of Bellerophon’s history of destroying monsters
or how Pegasus bides time well,
rides the updraft of patience,
its determinate wings prepared to tuck,
dive, and carry Bellerophon to the spearing
of evil and the return of reality
to its rightful place in existence?

If all else fails, one can hope
such mythology as metaphor
will reveal that which we may not know much of,
but instinctually know it is a positive aspiration.

Thanks for introducing "solipsism," within your thoughts turned into words. A new one for me. 'Course there are whole bunches of new ones for me. How long will solipsism exists?
Ah . . . That then is the question.

It is amazing that the mythology of so many ancient people, the Maya, the Egyptians, the Norse and the Greeks explore the conundrums of life nearly the same as we do today. So these myths still resonate with us as we view life's complex overlay of truth and deceit. When will it end? When we are truly smarter. When we literally engage in eugenics of one form or another and become smart enough to realize when we are wrong.

Indeed myths have much to tell us; while literally they may seem untrue, figuratively and metaphorically, their narrative carries with it elements of truth for the ages.

"Something happening here. What it is ain't exactly clear..........." Buffalo Springfield. "How long can mutation of heart
force subservience of mind?".............all wonder the same within that tiny morsel of one's conscience and will take action to resist. Excellent write, Odin!

Love ya!
