Words Fenced-In

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Perhaps now more than ever, what is said, what is written, is influencing our populous more than any other type of communication in the history of our planet. So, more 280-character blurbs, or, thoughtful concern with words asking readers to read and ponder? Option 3 - remain fenced in with an impoverished mind. (Image by April Visel)

Words Fenced-In

To write for,
or against,
that is the question.

Whether ‘tis nobler to fence in
or fence out word disturbances wise.

To protect or let run free?

Such is the wordsmith’s dilemma.

Writing for the rational mind
asks much of the compassionate heart,
for words conjure images,
and pictures coil emotions.

With so many memories often imprisoned,
many with their debt to honesty paid,
regrets bridle movement with unforgiving self-guilt.

Still, freedom beckons an untrammeled wordscape.

A tundra of Lexicon invention anticipates birth,
awaits reflected experience surging forth,
whether of corralled pain
or break-free celebration,
all are life’s unrestrained expression
eyeing the fence.

So…

Be not hesitant, dear writer-rider.
Seek not but open arms of acceptance.

Listen to all.

Hear the all.

Embrace those less-gifted
who might struggle to comprehend,
who might disagree with your stanzas of choice
offer to open the gate,
the universal unlatched exit
to everyone’s word-linked fences.

Those who trust…

Will accept your mind of no agenda,
your willing heart of open countenance,
the sharing of elements that can empower
others to act upon their own expression.

For without expressing what one thinks and feels,
be it with pen,

brush,
baton
chisel,
or keyboard,
is to forever enclose the stallion within,
the wild, free energy of nature’s creation.

Lest we forget…

Within everyone’s weathered storms
rests the many shocks of change,
often concretizing the heart and mind
into an inescapable encroachment.

But, to remain a rigid victim of circumstances,
is to think captivity of the past,
allowing the blinders of fear to preclude the future.

I've always hated word fences in whatever form they took. Why I endured all those English classes and have finally arrived with a doctorate where I've been told that I can "invent" new language if I wish.

Just yesterday, I was completing the survey on disability and had something that I strongly wanted to say in the comment box. Unfortunately, I ran over the 500 characters and the punchline at the end of my comment was cut off. Shit!

Whether the haiku or a novel of at least 300 pages, writing to a particular genre or to some kind of cultish mystery formula, I abhor fences, and gladly cut through them or jump over them at will.

What a near-perfect write, Odin. To say the most with the least words is superbly thought-out. I realize I am far from perfect, but I do endeavor to lighten my ignorance every once in a while. When I do I am amazed, but quietly under amazed. When I read your efforts I am put into another world.

Love them or hate them, and there are some that just don't sound right. Not a fan of the word purse. Not sure why... But be it a 1500 word essay or a six word text. We need them, and we should use them with integrity. We are probably more of a slang driven, multiple meaning, over- used worded society , but every so often, someone gets it right!
