Souring Sugar

Why is it that some people never grow out of their carnival fantasies? (Image by pinterest)

Wednesday, October 24, 2018

Poem Artwork

Souring Sugar

Cotton candy Happy
swirling in its cocoon of anticipation,
coloring itself to fit your mood,
served up by a three-hundred-pound testimony,
and all for Happy

Doesn't last long though,
this euphoria of mind,
today's relationship,
tomorrow's mistake.

BFFs to start,
jock buddies "On the Road" for some,
executive dining room rewards for others,
and often gold watches for time served.

All become part of tomorrow's
dumpster of limpid cones,
once swirled with fluffy sugar,
the sweetness of smiles,
suffocating the innocence of childhood.

Beware…

The carnival of horrors
a fool’s sweet-laced Happy,

will always deliver an aftertaste

of acerbic sugar.

This is intense, Odin! I do know what you mean! Oh, that is a terrible flavor to receive.

Love ya!

I had a totally different take on this. I related it to the sweet things in life that turn sour and become sadnesses, the fodder of our nightmares and regrets.
My reaction: What an excellent expression of that evolvement!

I know it was many years that I (or if I did) "never grow out of their carnival fantasies."

You certainly have that right. A lifetime of chasing the sugar and wasteful fleeting pleasure often turns quite sour in the end. Still, a few years ago when I had a chance at a conference to visit the Texas State Fair, all those sights, sounds and smells came back to me and gave me fond memories of childhood with cotton candy being omnipresent.
