Naked Hollywood

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

After re-watching John Schlesinger’s masterpiece, “The Day of the Locust”, I am reminded that that was then. This is now. Rather than a harsh indictment, the following is a reflection of my 60 plus years working and witnessing with much of what the art of cinema evolved into, even as some tried so hard to retain what it once was, at any cost. In 2018 we find ourselves ossified into the blasting caps of yet another decade of explosions for the anesthetized mind-set of mediocritized satisfaction. (One Sheet by Paramount Pictures)

Poem Artwork

Naked Hollywood

Where reflections in the Ivy mirror reflect only the shield defending the hidden person,
where the reserved table sounds of joy are but the soul-sludge evacuation of fear,
where the touch upon the "deal" shoulder as one leaves the ostentatious office means captivity.

Naked Hollywood

When lonely nights lead prematurely to inevitable doubts anesthetized by "means,"
when such nights are innocently the result of the isolating success one aspires,
when the Nebraska cornfields beneath summer moonlight will remain the non-redeemable past.

Naked Hollywood

The How of virtue lost forever,
the How of integrity reduced to Whatever it takes,
the How of dreams captured by the pimps of waste,

Tinsel Town’s masqueraders of daytime nightmares.

Naked Hollywood

Once knew of magic accessible to everyone,
once knew that empowering imagination could sell tickets of quality,
once understood that audiences could be emboldened with cinematic connection.

Naked Hollywood

Is rapidly fading into indifference,
is becoming remiss in its responsibility to influence positive action,
is but a translucent super-imposition of the confused,
is perhaps becoming all it wishes to be...

a fascist shackling of hostages

or an attempt to thwart consciousness?

Naked Hollywood

What might such raw courage be today,
were the progeny of cinema nourished by decision-makers
with empowerment and truth-seeking as their goal?

Perhaps…

With integrity dressed,

vigilance armed,

and a compassion-ready Hollywood,

such could share with us

a rich two-hours worth watching…

and remembering.

I'm one of those who reads the book first and is never quite happy with the movie. The imagination can do so much more than a set and actors ever could although they are fine actors in whichever case it may be. I admire actors! When I was younger, I was in a few plays and was amazed with it all. Movies are for entertainment and if they draw the crowds, there's the money, honey!

Love ya!

I'm not sure what you mean. Every year I find that classics are made, either with new stories or with new technology raising the bar in terms of both knowledge and relationships. Especially during the Academy Awards where movies are presented that are not blockbuster financial successes but create new ways of expressing humanity's myriad ways of life.

If you are referring to the golden days of the big studios. I can see all kinds of studio enhanced actors who were committed to doing movie genres that stereotyped them them for life. They led destructive lives and committed suicide about the same way they do today.

However, for the young crowd, shock is good. The more shock, the better. The more violence the better. Sex is bad. Any mention or revealing of anything sexual except bizarre costumes and self-flagulating tattoos and piercings must be strictly prohibited. (what's wrong with this picture?)

There's still some good stuff out there, but today's movies tend to focus on special effects, and/or being just downright gross, rather than produce something with good writing.

Couldn’t agree more with your last stanza, but to me, it took all the stanza's to complete your excellent poem, Odin. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Stunning poem and rendition worthy of Hollywood's best.

This is a great visual and certainly sets the tone - where the touch upon the "deal" shoulder as one leaves the ostentatious office means captivity. There seems to be less and less interesting movies.
